Kuntz had gone as far as he could with LAFC, six years is a long time. Glad we have him - hope he spends six years with us before jumping to Euro dreams. Interesting that his wife didn't want to move to Texas, Kuntz basically dropped into Beckerman's lap from this telling. We always benefit from our location.
I encourage all y'all to re-read this entire thread from the beginning. At the time this thread was started, we were still hurting from finishing 26th out of 29 teams and now we're champions of MLS. I believe you'll find a retro read of this thread to be quite enjoyable.
Billy Sharp with 6g and 1a in 19 matches so far this season with Doncaster in League 2. Had 0g and 0a for Hull last season in 11 matches.
So whomever, made the decision not to resign Sharp, made the right one whether it was communicated correctly or not.
Dejan had a g/90 of 0.70 g/90 for this season amd a whopping 1.07 g/90 the previous season. Sharp is currently at 0.5 g/90 for the season with Doncaster. It lowers to 0.38 g/90 if counting the 11 games with Hull. Berry was at 0.22 g/90 this season. If compared to Berry, Sharp would have been a better option, but then it also comes down to value and whatever salary cap shenanigans and personnel decisions that would have resulted if Sharp remained with the Gs. At the end of the day, the Gs won!
Well Sharp in 2023 was paid 33% more than Berry in 2024. Nor was he a candidate for doing late game defensive work. As for his g/90 stats, I don't find a comparison of League 2 with the MLS meaningful. The fact that he didn't score at all in his time with Hull in the Championship is pretty indicative of what he might have produced in MLS.
Because there is a difference between beating a poor, bottom of the table LA Galaxy II in 2023 4-0 (when Wrexham was in league 2) to competing in MLS. That Los Dos team got pounded by other Nextpro teams by bigger margins than Wrexham accomplished. When Wrexham's League 1 roster in 2024 beat Vancouver, they were not playing Vancouver's starters but their B and C players as Vancouver was resting its starters for their match against LAFC in Leagues cup. As an example, the Vancouver player who scored against Wrexham, Bovalina, was a 20 year old fb/winger who split time between time between the first team and the Nextpro team. He played 165 minutes for the first team with no goals and no assists. You might also look at the Global Football Team Rankings. Wrexham is rated the 832 top team in the world. The Galaxy are rated 128th and aren't even the top MLS Club in their ratings which Ii am guessing is based on the 2023 season as the Crew is the top rated MLS team at 68. https://globalfootballrankings.com/rankings/teams/
Berry played 826 mins this season and scored 2 goals. This would equate to roughly 3-4 goals for Sharp based on his 0.38g/90 rate. Assuming Sharp would have played more minutes than Berry, it would have taken minutes away from Dejan potentially, which would have lowered the Gs total goal outputs potentially. Maybe would have lowered it moreso because maybe Vanney starts Sharp rather than having Joe play the striker when Dejan was injured.
I don't believe that Sharp's g/90 rate in League 2 carries over to an equivalent g/90rate in MLS any more than a g/90 rate in USL or MLS Next Pro does. We will have to agree to disagree.
Post not meant to agree or disagree. More to just show what Sharp's potential total goal output would have been if taking his g/90 at face value. Overall, it likely supports the notion that his output would not have made his 33% higher salary worth it...lol
