this guy is nothing but troll. After defeats he always blamed loss on his players and criticalized their abilities. Then after he was sacked, he constantly criticized Hiddink's tactic and work ethic. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! NO HUH JUNG MOO. Does KFA want to crash the plane or what? Dammit just hire the Turkish dude or something. Even Hiddink would be fine.
I second this regarding Cha Bumkeun. He sucked as the coach in 98. How can any coach say to the press that the Korean players are not good enough to beat the European teams? That kind of negative coaching is what doomed Korea even before the opening whistle.
he didnt suck as the coach in 98. the team tore apart asia, was winning by a goal against Mexico. lost 5-0 to holland but we have lost 6-2 to iran before too.
i think we still aint ready to have a korean coach no shame in hiring a foreign coach i believe even England did that during the WC
did you forget how he kept Choi yong-soo on the bench in the mexico game???? WHAT WAS HE THINKING? Choi was hardly a "secret" by that time! Then he decided to use get this Choi Young-il and Lee Min-sung to MANMARK Overmars and Bergkamp. A chimpanzee can lead Korea to victory over Asia.
Great player, horrible coach Cha was a great player, no doubt about it. But as a coach, he was seriously lacking. He brought no innovation in tactics and play. Korea was lucky to win in Japan during WC98 qualifications. Korea promptly lost 2-0 in Seoul later (though Korea already qualified by then). In both games, Japan was much more dangerous and showed higher level of skill. My biggest disappointment with Cha was his negative evaluation of his own players. How do you think NK upset Italy in '66? By believing in themselves. He killed the team mentally before the game was even played.
Its called negative reinforcement. He really believed his players would search themselves and find the higher level. I tend think he really did believe in the players and was just trying to juice them. In this case it didnt work. But a lot of coaches use this psychology to keep their players from getting fat heads. Hindsight is 20/20. Cha was looking like a god there for a minute. Post Hiddink, we are now realizing how outdated his brick tactics really were.
in a sense, Hiddink has been doing that the whole time too. He has said that we should never be cocky so that it stops us from improving.
Not the same Hiddink said in an interview that he tried to break down the ego of arrogant players like Ahn Jung-Hwan to humble him into playing harder. He dealt with players who play their hearts out, like Kim Nam-Il differently. He only complimented him, because he know that Kim was harder on himself than anyone. Hiddink never put the whole team down. Even when he acknowledged shortcomings, he always said something to the effect that good things can happen when you play hard. He always gave them hope. Cha flat out said that Korean players cannot compete with European teams. He gave them no hope.
We seem to be caught in a dilemma where we want the "Hiddink-type" success but with a Korean coach. The problem in this dilemma is that for the national team to continue on the road to progress in football, we have to break out of reactionary shell that has often limited our football. I don't understand why it took us so long to realize that only a foreign coach could bring this type of success. And now, even after seeing for ourselves and experiencing the euphoria of being in the top four of the world in a World Cup (and not some stupid FIFA rankings), we are in the danger of regression back into the football cesspool of mediocrity. Has the KFA learned nothing? Are we actually on the verge of seeing another Korean coach take over? Why don't we just resign our national team from every FIFA tournament and just sit out for 2 years. That would be better than having to suffer the humiliation of playing mediocre football with antiquated tactics (both on and off the pitch) of the coach. We've set the standard for Korean football on a high level after June. When you've touched heaven with your hand, having your feet on the earth is like living in hell.
a blast from the past. Sheesh, some of the those who posted in this thread 6 years ago are still alive and kicking!
Re: Great player, horrible coach Lets delete "Cha" and insert "Huh" in the same sentence. It's the same old shit, only the names have changed.
