Is this tournament not important enough to call back our foreign players? (Or are they too busy with club loyalties?) We did get last place in the last tournament.... -_- Also, whats going on with the Korea Football Assoc. website? I can't get any updates on Game schedules or news on the Korean NT. Any suggestions? BTW, Can anybody tell me the game dates for the EAFF Tourny? Who is participating? NK, SK, Japan, China?
I got it from wikipedia..so who knows if its really reliable but... The East Asian Cup is a football competition of East Asian countries and territories, held by the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF). There is a separate competition for both men (first held in 2003) and women (first held in 2005); this page describes the men's competition. There was also a combined points competition in 2005, where the results of the men's and women's teams are added together (not including qualifiers). China, South Korea and Japan have the right to automatically enter the competition, while other participants have to go through a qualifying round. Other participants that take part are Chinese Taipei, North Korea, Guam, Hong Kong, China, and Mongolia, and Macau, China. The competition format requires a team to play each of the other teams once; the team leading the table wins the cup. Before the EAFF was founded in 2002, the Dynasty Cup was held between the East Asian top 4 teams, and was regarded as the unofficial East Asian Championship.
not sure if anyone bothered to read but I posted an information on this in the Korea vs Turkmenistan game day thread in the 9th page
I don't think it's automatically...it's probably top three fifa ranking teams qualify and the one from the eaff qualifying round qualifies...
How come we're not using any foreign-base players? I just hope Korea can pull this competition with that roster and not use this competition as a training exercise for the Olympics. Also the competition is soon, February 17 - 23, 2008. http://www.eaff.com/competitions/eafc2008/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asian_Cup_2008
I did some comparison with past tournament squads... No European based players were used. My guess is because its a short tournament, hence, Euro clubs wouldn't want to release the players... OR perhaps, only players playing in an East Asian Pro-League can participate... Dunno exactly. this is all pure speculation on my part... (Credit for info goes to RSSSF site btw) Well, here's the 2003 EAFF Championship Squad: (All K-League or J-League Players) SOUTH KOREA Coach: Humberto Coelho (Portugal) Captain: Yoo Sang-chul GK: 1-Lee Woon-jae (Suwon Samsung), 21-Kim Yong-dae (Busan I-cons), 23-Kim Hae-woon (Seongnam Ilhwa); DF: 4-Choi Jin-cheul (Chonbuk Hyundai), 5-Kim Hyun-soo (Seongnam Ilhwa), 6-Yoo Sang-chul (Yokohama F-Marinos, Japan), 7-Kim Tae-young (Chunnam Dragons), 13-Lee Eul-yong (Anyang LG), 15-Park Jae-hong (Chonbuk Hyundai), 22-Cho Se-kwon (Ulsan Hyundai); MF: 2-Hyun Young-min (Ulsan Hyundai), 3-Chun Jae-ho (Seongnam Ilhwa), 8-Choi Won-kwon (Anyang LG), 10-Lee Kwan-woo (Daejeon Citizen), 12-Kim Dong-jin (Anyang LG), 20-Kim Do-heun (Suwon Samsung); FW: 9-Kim Do-hoon (Seongnam Ilhwa), 11-Choi Yong-soo (JEF United Ichihara, Japan), 14-Kim Eun-jung (Vegalta Sendai, Japan), 16-Chung Kyung-ho (Ulsan Hyundai), 18-Kim Dae-eui (Seongnam Ilhwa), 19-Ahn Jung-hwan (Shimizu S-Pulse, Japan). 2005 EAFF Championship Squad: (Once again, all players are from the K-League or J-League) SOUTH KOREA Coach: Jo Bonfrere (Netherlands). GK: 1-Lee Woon-jae (Suwon Samsung), 23-Kim Yong-dae (Busan I.Park), 30-Kim Young-kwang (Chunnam Dragons). DF: 2-You Kyoung-youl (Ulsan Hyundai), 3-Kim Han-yoon (Bucheon SK), 4-Kim Jin-kyu (Jubilo Iwata, Japan), 5-Kim Young-chul (Seongnam Ilhwa), 17-Oh Beom-seok (Pohang Steelers), 29-Kwak Hee-ju (Suwon Samsung). MF: 8-Kim Do-heon (Seongnam Ilhwa), 11-Choi Tae-uk (Shimizu S-Pulse, Japan), 12-Baek Ji-hoon (FC Seoul), 13-Kim Dong-jin (FC Seoul), 14-Kim Sang-sik (Seongnam Ilhwa), 15-Kim Jung-woo (Ulsan Hyundai), 19-Hong Soon-hak (Daegu FC), 21-Yang Sang-min (Chunnam Dragons), 22-Park Kyu-sun (Chonbuk Hyundai). FW: 9-Lee Chun-soo (Ulsan Hyundai), 10-Park Chu-young (FC Seoul), 16-Chung Kyung-ho (Gwangju Sangmu), 18-Kim Jin-ryong (Ulsan Hyundai), 20-Lee Dong-gook (Pohang Steelers).
Aw, this stinks... Well, based on the 50 players pool Heo released previouly, I'm guessing he'll pick either: Chung Kyung-Ho or Yang Sang-Min...
Only six players categorized as defenders? All CB's... I'm guessing Coach Heo's gonna go for 3-4-3 or 3-5-2... It's nice to see that Lee Keun-Ho is on the list. BTW, did Oh Jang-Eun fully recover from his shoulder injury??? (he missed Olympic training in Spain coz of this I heard...)
Lee Sang-ho was called up to replace Kim Chi-woo. I'm a huge fan of Lee Sang-ho, but I don't know what to make of this. AM to replace an injured LB. And we don't even have Lee Young-pyo or Kim Dong-jin for this tourney. Only player that's available for the starting LB position now is Park Won-jae unless Huh makes a position change. I really wanted to see Jang Hak-young get a shot, but oh well. We'll see how this goes. I'm hoping to see Lee Jong-min get some PT.
I'd be surprised to see him get called up anytime soon. Seeing how Jeonnam spent a fortune last year to bring Kim Chi-woo from Incheon (Yang Sang-min was then sent to Suwon on a loan deal), it seemed to me like Huh was never a fan of him while the two was in Gwangyang. He IS in the stand-by squad, so I guess it's not entirely out of the question. I'm just surprised that Jang Hak-young is being completely ignored.
OK, turns out that it's not Lee Sang-ho from Ulsan and U23 NT. It's some ninja from Jeju Utd with a same name. He's a defender. I guess it makes more sense position-wise, but who is this guy?
so let me get this straight... 1. we have no foreign based players for this tournament? 2. Then does anybody know if Japan and China are calling up their foreign players? 3. Also, whatever happened to Lee Chunsoo/ Song Chong Guk/ Choi Sung Guk?
Lee Chun Soo is probably left out from the time against Chile probably because he wants to be considerate to help him establish himself in Holland. Song Chung Guk is a right back and an aging one too. He still has not shown as half as what he can be since god knows how long ago. It's about time for Korea to move on to younger blood, and maybe that and the formational reasons behind huh's supposed 3-back plan. last but not least Choi Sung-kuk, now this player is a player that I am curious as to why he wasn't exactly picked by Huh. He's got speed, one of the best dribblers in Korea, can play as winger and striker. My only assumption is that, he was left out probably also because of the usual overwhelming depth we have at that dept, and also of Huh's tactical choice.
Anyways, there are 15 players out of 23 with 2 or less Caps heading for this tournament which shows the intention of Huh in planning his long term team starting from the scratch leading to successful transition from old to young. But having said that, anything less than a draw against China/Japan/NK is totally unacceptable for me. Don't want to only rely on results during this tourney, but if Korea can't end strongly then I reckon it's not going to get any easier for Korea because National Team Football has reached an all time low already for as long as I can remember.
The Schedule 17th (4.30pm Korea Time) China : Korea 20th (9.45pm Korea Time) Korea : N.Korea 23rd (7.45pm Korea Time) Korea : Japan
Ahh, I thought that Kim Chi-Woo came to Jeonnam in the trade for Kim Jin-Kyu to FC Seoul. I guess I was mistaken.
