Did I miss a rule change where Lamine Yamal is allowed to use his elbow to knock the ball down? It seemed pretty obvious from where we were sitting, so we were very surprised that VAR didn’t correct that “penalty.”

Any contact on or above this line is permitted, while contact below it constitutes a foul. Getting Jordan pickford foul on Virgil Van Dijk vibes
VAR is a joke. The rules if the game are a joke. Both are applied selectively when the refs feel like it. It's been double standards all tournament. Clear handball before the Yamal penalty. They cancel goals for that sort of thing, but yeah let's give a cheap penalty and kill the game.
I was a bit confused why it wasn't ruled out as well, the ball looked like it hit his upper arm to me and he didn't even try to play it, he was just entirely focussed on throwing himself in-between the ball and player. Apart from that it was a masterclass from Spain. Deserved win.
Conspiracy theory that FIFA wants to sell those 3rd place match tickets at the highest possible price by making sure France is in that match, maybe with a showdown with Messi for the Golden Boot. LOL.
None of the 3 conditions below apply. It wasn't intentional, he didn't make himself bigger and he didn't score. It is a 100% penalty. Easy call. It is an offence if a player: deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised scores in the opponents’ goal: directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper immediately after the ball has touched their hand/arm, even if accidental
People are taking away from the awareness and hustle by Yamal to draw the penalty from that position. That was a great play on his behalf.
but is it any different than the penalty England had ruled out by VAR for trying to shield the ball? both players were putting themselves between the ball and player. Even ignoring the handball aspect why is one a penalty and the other not? Yamal was not even trying to play the ball as his eyes were closed expecting the foul whereas the England player had control of it.
Digne’s touch of the ball was uncontrolled. The ball was in a 50-50 position in the air and Yamal took a clever angle with good timing to where the ball bounced off of him and he got kicked in the process. 100% a penalty.
I could see that Law I quoted above being amended again in the near future so that even an accidental hand ball that leads directly to a penalty will be deemed an offense. But as the Laws currently exist there is nothing in there that could rule out that penalty on Digne. Its such an easy call that if the ref hadn't called it initially, VAR would have stepped in and given a penalty.
This makes absolutely no sense. He didnt score, yet was awarded a penalty TO SCORE. If he would have scored it would be called off, therefore the penalty awarded for A POTENTIAL SCORE, should not have been called.
So is football about scoring or about DRAWING PENALTIES ? This seems like a con man's approach, rather than an actual sport. This is why many people are getting turned off by football, all the diving, simulation, and "drawing penalties" aka let me not try and play the ball, let me just stick my foot in front of you so you can hit me. This is a disgrace. Play the focking game. Inferior people need to win like this.
No. Most players in his position would have waited for Digne to get control of the ball or try and steal it too quickly and commit the foul. He used his instincts and futbol awareness to position himself to where the ball was and the French player fouled him. The foul stopped what more than likely would have been a good attacking opportunity on goal. A foul in the area is a penalty.
What do you mean by "should not have been called"? These are the Laws. And remember, this is a recent amendment to the law. It used to be that you could even score directly from an accidental hand ball. Interestingly, France was on the opposite side of the same Law in their previous match against Morocco. I think it was Rabiot who handled the ball but it was deemed accidental. It led to a goal by Mbappe.
It was deemed a goal because it entered a different phase of play. Morocco cleared the ball from the original foul. The Yamal penalty did not enter a new phase, thus there shouldn't have been a penalty. It was a hand ball and play should have stopped right there.
