Camp roster released in two phases: Mostly Euro-based players on 5/15, mostly MLS-based on 5/20 @AdamTheRed When will roster be out? #AskJK So basically, the roster will be split between Europeans and the Domestics, most likely to test Domestics in the friendlies and try to see who adapts well during the qualifiers.
So this might mean that MLS players miss the Scotland friendly. Actually Denmark will still be playing the week of the 26th as well, so if Goodson/Parkhurst are deemed worthy they will still probably miss out. Otherwise, I see 0 point in splitting the announcement.
Yes the Scotland friendly is on the 26th so it looks like Donovan and the MLS players will be playing. They have games on the 19th so I think Klinsmann is letting them play those, then have them come to camp, hence the split dates. Make them miss only one game instead of two.
How many MLSers are really going to be included? 5? 7? I have Rimando, Donovan, Beckerman, Sapong and Wondo. Shea if he recovers from his injury.
What? Why on earth would you think this? Skipping friendlies for the MLS Cup is not an answer. This is qualifying. Not friendlies. Several people were predicting the MLS players would not be called in for the first friendly. Looks like that is not the case. I'm happy about that as both Wondo and Landon would have played 5/23 and 5/26 - too many games before qualifying. This proposition lets them play the 19th, then fly out to join the team. That's two more games for them to get through uninjured. Also means the players probably know that they are getting called (and Jermaine Jones' interviews today make it sound like that's the case as well - he's referring to his call-up in his interviews). Likely call-ups: Beckerman/Rimando: 5/12 FCD, could come on the 15th as RSL has a bye the following week (Rimando has a shoulder injury) LD: 5/12 Montreal, 5/19 Chivas Wondo: 5/13 Chivas, 5/19 Columbus Shea: 5/12 Columbus, 5/19 Union
No team needs three friendlies to get ready. The Scotland match is essentially useless. I would expect the MLS players to join after the 26th. MLS is basically going dark for 2+ weeks right after that night.
We'd don't need three friendlies to get ready for Antigua? I imagine there will be a few MLS players held out of the Scotland match by their clubs. Which the clubs are within their rights to do. If the whole squad is available for the subsequent friendlies, we'll be fine.
Ww We have 3 friendlies to test the domestic squad. Players who show they can be an international can then play against Brazil along with the Euros. IMO, if there was a chance where I could switch the Brazil friendly to after the Canada friendly, that would have been awesome, because then we would really have the opportunity to see who can cut it for the last tough friendly, Brazil, in which the best domestic players get their positions along side the Euros.
if our players were already showing evidence that they had fully transitioned to klinsmans game, if we were seeing the team firing on all cylinders, i'd agree. but we are not. 3 games to tweak the team and move them forward are very much needed for us right now, even if there was no qualifying right after. my hope is we finally see all the obvious starters together, and we start hitting our stride going into qualifiers, on the back of these friendlies.
The should play Spain, Germany and Holland. And the Champions League winner home and away. Antigua is not to be trifled with. But seriously - a trip to Europe before the Euros themselves would have been the tops. As long as it stayed out of Ukraine.
I thought I had read somewhere that the players would be in camp by the 15th meaning that the roster should come a few days before that??? Anyways I like that the fact that he said there would be no experimenting in these upcoming friendlies and WCQ, we finally get to see what he and his staff think is the best available team that we have at this point.
The problem is you have some of the MLS players playing two games right before those friendlies. They will be tired heading straight into more games. If we want them at their best, they join the squad after the games on the 19th.
MLS is their paycheck. If the Galaxy and RSL or whoever wants to run their players into the ground before May 27th, that is their business. If Kyle Beckerman is tired, oh well, Klinsman will have to deal with it. They can do a couple days of regenerative training, just like the Euro players will go through next week when they arrive. Club soccer is tiring. The only one that matters is Donovan. He can play a half vs. Brazil and Canada. The rest are looking for a spot on the bench. Realistically, they will have 10+ days to actively rest and prepare for the meaningful games. (Don't get me wrong, I would love for the Nat team to take priority, but there are no rules or laws that make the clubs have to play nice with the Nat team)
Yup........ MLS clubs can deny the callup of these players for the Scotland camp/friendly if they so choose. In the same way that Mexico called up Chicharito for the Olympics as an overage player recently, and Manchester United told them to go screw themselves. So he's not going.................... We're used to a very cordial relationship between MLS and the USSF, however.
I hear you on the rules. I would just hope the relationship between MLS and US soccer would work this out. And after the debacle in Olympic qualifying, don't put it past US soccer to tell MLS to take a backseat on the handful of players that depart. Beckerman/Rimano have byes, so it's okay for them. So really you're right, it's LD and I'd also say Wondo that matter. Both have two games that week.
I will guarantee, we will play Scotland and probably Brazil and not one person on this board will say "Boy, I wish Wondo was out there." But then again, I may be underestimating Earthquake fans.
