    BOSTON'S KARINA LEBLANC
NAMED MET-Rx® PLAYER OF THE WEEK
    - Breakers Standout Becomes First Goalkeeper to Win the Award in 2003 -

ATLANTA (Monday, June 2, 2003) - Boston Breakers goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending June 1, 2003. LeBlanc recorded her first shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over the San Jose CyberRays on Saturday, May 31 at Nickerson Field.

A member of the Canadian national team, LeBlanc had six saves and eight catch punches in the win over San Jose. She made many key saves, including one on a half-volley from the left by Pretinha in the 22nd minute. Just before the half, LeBlanc made two key saves, stopping a Katia header inside the six-yard box as well as a 25-yard blast by the Brazilian striker that was stopped on a fingertip grab by the Boston 'keeper. The 23-year-old LeBlanc, who is now 4-3-2 on the season, is the first goalkeeper selected as the MET-Rx Player of the Week in 2003. In fact, she is the first non-forward to win the weekly honor.

LeBlanc's 30 points (12 first place, 6 second place) narrowly defeated Philadelphia's Marinette Pichon (8, 13, 29 pts.). Others who received votes were San Diego's Jaime Pagliarulo, Atlanta's Briana Scurry, Carolina's Birgit Prinz, Atlanta's Charmaine Hooper and San Diego's Julie Fleeting. The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.

    Excellent!

I suspect that somewhere in the Caribbean is a proud Mom..who witnessed her daughter's feat on her birthday :) Quite the worthwhile trip to the States.

Congrats, Karina... very well done :D

yaa! It's about time a Breaker got it and Karina definitely deserves it. Not only did she get the shutout, but she helped the Breakers to be the only team to win this weekend! All the other games were ties. I gotta say, I thought she had an absolutely SUPERB game!
