I thought we had some really great kits with Nike. Not always, but they had some really classy ones imo. One thing I really liked with Nike is when they more or less kept it simple, which Adidas seems incapable of imo. The 6 kits they made for the trio of dominate seasons between 06-09 are probably my favorite collection of United kits. I also think that overall Nike has gotten really good the last 5 or so years. I thought they had the best kits at the last World Cup and Euros.
The Nike kits only got bad the last few years. Before that we had some really good ones. The Adidas kits have been a disaster across the board.
I liked the first couple of home kits, if you completely ignored the abomination of the Chevy logo. I don't mind the greenish kit slated for next year but I don't know if that's because of the utter state of the other two. I can cope with one of the third kits being atrocious occasionally, but the home kit should be sacred. Don't ******** it up.
When it comes to United kits, nothing will beat the 07 kits. Clean red home kit and the best kit we've ever had, the black and red away kit.
Surely someone at the club has a final say in the designs right? Adidas can't just show them some muck and say this is what you're getting.
I could be completely wrong, but I wouldnt be surprised if the kits designs are to target a certain market. United lately is run as a business first and I thought I remember seeing something a while back that the Asian market accounts for a huge percentage of the clubs merch revenue. If thats true, that would explain the loud design choices as it falls more in like with that target demographic.
The goal is to sell so it's hard to imagine that they'd deliberately sabotage themselves in that area. Companies such as these must put in a ton a research and it stands to reason that each design has been created to satisfy all kind of tastes out there, even the more 'eccentric' ones obviously. There definitely seems to be a trend in kit releases nowadays, with one close in some way to the expected/traditional design, one that is pretty much out there or completely different from the norm (usually the third one) and the away one, which is a departure from the norm but still rather conventional in some way. I am curious about how sales have gone though since Adidas took over (and if they've increased or conversely dipped over time).
Look at the Japanese league kits for example. Most have a very busy design. Nothing wrong with it, just a regional thing.
I'm getting both.... anyone who doesn't get them aren't top red and shouldn't be considered real United fans
