From today: Essentially translated: Either Mathis 'changes' or he is gone at the Winter Break. (Interestingly, same article- rest not shown- has a similiar set-up, albeit friendlier tone, for Sousa- the $1m purchase from Portuguese League...who supposedly was going to replace Clint) "Noch deutlicher bahnt sich derweil ein Abschied von Clint Mathis (27) an. Mit dessen Berater führte Kaenzig in München "ein sehr gutes Gespräch". Tenor: Entweder müsse der US-Boy seine Einstellung ändern - oder im Winter einen neuen Arbeitgeber suchen." http://www.kicker.de/content/news/a...iga=1&saison=2004/05&spieltag=12&gruppe=12425
I dont see clint as someone who "changes" easily. If he leaves where does it look like he'll go? Come back to MLS or will other German clubs try to pick him up? ( or maybe he'll have other options). He had so much hype two years ago and now his career seems to be in a bit of a quagmire.
I highly doubt he comes back to MLS. He was itching too bad to leave and has only been gone on a year. No way he comes back yet.
If I read this correctly, this comes from his Munich-based agent (I probably read it incorrectly), and I really would like to have heard what they're considering if he doesn't change his attitude. It does seem pretty definitive.
While I hope Clint can move to another team, one that plays to his strengths... My bigger hope is that Clint learns from this and becomes more "professional". He's not good enough that he can act any way he wants. Clint will be 28 later this month (birthdate - November 25th, 1976) and maybe it's time to figure out that sometimes you have to "play ball" off the field as much as on it. He's too good of a talent to let it slip away due to personality conflicts.
Clint will get another chance in a top Euro league- if he wantss...but he does have to make it happen there (w/no complaints). After that, it'll be MLS, or lower league Europe, or nothing IMO. I think he'll seize this next chance. He's in shape now, and although never fully recovered from the knee surgeries, he can be a stud in several situations yet (I believe)
I've never been sold on him, and still am unsure how he fits into the current scheme of things for USA and Bruce Arena's system. But hopefully where-ever he ends up next will go well for him.
I don't see any top Euro leagues signing him for a multiple year contract. He will come in as a "trial" player (6 mths, a year) and have to prove he deserves a contract. He basically has no leverage, and will have to take a pay cut. Things not looking good for Cletus. We still give him too much credit on these boards when compared to how they see him throughout Europe. ColaShip or Bundesliga strugglers, or possible risers at best. He has screwed himself. Gee, what a surprise. Never hard to call with Clint, but his defenders will rise to challenge all. How easily his talents become surpluss to coaches on both sides of the pond. Yeah, nothing to do with Clint. It's all a mirage...a Euro/Yank conspiracy. He's just misunderstood. He needs that coddling coach who "understands him" because he is so irraplaceable. TO he is not. I'll be shocked if he works his way out of this and actually makes an impact for a decent side for more than the usual 3 mths. Sigh. On to better things. I place Clint in the JOB category. Don't expect anything or rely on them. If they ever come through again its' a huge bonus.
Never said he'd get the same big, longer-term deal as before. I think he'll get more than 6 mos. (maybe a 1 year), and yeah he'll have to perform to get a re-up...
I am pretty sure that, unless there was a buy-out/release clause in his contract, Hanover is still on the hook for Clint's entire salary for the duration of his deal. If so, their best hope is to dump him to another B-liga club on a free transfer, hoping to find another sucker for his wages (or a team big enough, for whom it won't matter much and Clint be worth taking a chance). He might have hard time getting into the EPL or ColaShip due to his cap situation (rare and getting rarer) and his salary may be too high for the smaller leagues, given his attitude. And his is not a Mutu case (gross dereliction/breach of contract) where he'd have to forfeit his salary. PS. I also doubt MLS will match his Hanover compensation.
Well, if you mean physically being able to play...but I think the mentality (attitude) of the two is different.
You mean the Coca Cola Championship? IE div2 England or teh old but not too old div 1 in England? Or the ol' Le Championat in France which now goes by Ligue 1 Orange?
One would hope so. Obviously a couple of highlight reel goals do not a great player make, but you have to think he impressed at least a few watchers over there (Bobby McMahon was impressed, for crap's sake!).
how long was his contract for ? Hannover may need to sell him if they want to part, i don't see any clubs that might be interested. It will be a Sanneh situation here, Clint will sit out his contract in street clothes but get paid, not to bad deal if you ask me.
I think Cologne/Koln would be a great place for him. They rely a lot on Podolski, and Mathis could help. The crowd also loves characters there.
How about one of the lower level EPL teams who can't score a goal to save their lives? Clint could get a look in from them if he can go on a free or very cheap. It is a shame that he constantly does damage to his career with his poor attitude. Oh well, lucky for the USMNT that we have plenty of other younger players who can fill his place without all of these side issues.
Huub Stevens at Koln would have somewhere between ridicule and contempt for Mathis. Huub demands players be the consumate professional, and thos are words Mathis would never know the meaning of.
If anything, Clint changes too easily. He has always done better at the front end of a stint. That's the reason why he is a journeyman player rather than a star. Clubs will take a chance on him because of his skill; but in the long run his mercurial attitude wears thin. He also doesn't have the resolve to stick it out in a tough situation, see the Metrostars of 2002. If Clint decided to humble himself a little and adopt a more professional, e.g. more cooperative attitude, he might actually show more consistency, too.
You all forget that Mathis is God. Let's be honest here, as long as he plays well for USMNT do we really care how he does elsewhere? I recognize he represents the US, but I don't think that really plays a role on the market for other Americans.
