I spoke to the owner of the Kezar Pub while watching the US men's match. He indicated that he would have no problem getting the MLS package if there is enough interest.

This is where we come in. We need people to come next Saturday for the season opener and show him that there is interest. I will try and make contact with him tues/wed to give him an approximate head count.

What would make the deal sweeter is for each person to chip in whatever part of $100 (the commercial rate for the season) is necessary - 10people $10, etc. That way there will be no risk involved and they will always have the matches.

Please support Kezar and MLS by making it the only SF location for MLS games. We can make it happen.

Awesome. I don't think you'd need to pitch in all the money up front, you could cover it over the course of the season. It'll be cool to get a gathering spot in SF.

Interest seems to be building, things look good. I will probably be in touch with the owner late this week.

If you do come on the 12th, please bring a friend and SO, etc. Lets pack the place.

    James -
    Thanks for putting this together.
I'm shocked at how low the commercial rate is, though... holey smokes. I can't believe we're even having to convince Kezar's, much less any other of a handful of places in town...
I'm good for $10 - where should I send it if I can't make it on Sat?
Also, why is making Kezar's the only place for MLS in SF good for MLS? I was sitting in a bar at Scott and Lombard on Sat, watching the US game & it was a fair amount of casual attention, including some guy who was clearly watching the Giants, but who had played NCAA D1 soccer at Texas. I would think that the more people who see soccer, the better.
    thanks,
    Jeff

I challenge you to find a bar in SF that will show an MLS match. I'll be happy to get just one that does it willing, and without the threat of changing the channel if there isn't more interest. There is only so much demand for folks wanting to watch an MLS match in SF, so its important that we all band together in just one spot to make this happen. Maybe someday in the far off future there will be a dozen places to watch the Quakes away matches in SF, but for now it looks like Kezar is it.

Looks like I'll be out of town, but will definitely bring friends along for future viewings. Kezar's great.

    Thanks morrisey.

I'm pretty sure I can make it. I second the notion that it would be great to finally have a Quakes bar in SF.

How did this go last year? Were you guys able to rally somewhat of a regular kezar viewing party?

We had several decent viewing parties with 10-15 (loud!) people in attendance.

Yes, we definitely need to ask Kezar to purchase the Shootout package again this year.

Am I the only one that finds it disturbing that we have to go to these lengths to support a local professional team. It seams that with as many foreign people as there are in the Bay Area, this really shouldn't be a problem, but I guess it is.

Anyway I'm in for $10 if you need it although, it seams that if they ordered the Shootout package they would easily make their money back on drinks and food sold to people watching the games.

I have taken it upon myself to call them periodically to ask if they are going to order it again this year and request they do, as have a couple of buddies. Hope it helps.

You should make sure to be cordial with those guys. I went to see a lot of the Shootout games this season there and all the bartenders were really cool there even though I would have to go it and request a TV to be turned to a game several times and I might be the only person watching a MetroStars game on a Wed. night.

I know they were more than happy with the people they got and easily made more that 100 dollars they paid as a restaurant to get the package.

Unfortunately I moved to LA so I can't be a regular patron this year

No, you're not. BTW, do you or anyone have any idea if the play of the Quakes (and the rest of MLS) is moving Eurosnobs at all? Or are the ES's bunch of hardheads that refuse to be moved?

I know this idea is "outside of the box" especially the the Quakes FO, but why don't they drop off, or send some Quakes stuff to Kezar. Some schedules, a pennant, signed jersey, something. SF fans did all they could last season to get this place somewhat of an MLS bar and people in the FO knew it was going on, (we knew you read these boards) so why not help the fans who are helping them. As a fan I would take my own stuff down there but it looks kind of lame for a fan to do this. Once again I am going to ask the front office to do alittle outreach to the bars and pubs that are supporting you outside SJ. Start with Kezar in SF, and Ricky's in the East Bay and give them some props and free stuff for thier efforts. A few Eurosnobs might be swayed if they had to see a signed Donovan Jersey everytime they walked into Kezar and knew every other satuday MLS fans were there to see the Quakes, not ManU.

I brought 2 to The Collapse. converted... (bastards! )

For me personally, it's getting a little easier each year. I'm working on a costa rican from Alajuela, and he'll probably go to the game in late march w/ me.

If the US qualifies for the Olympics and gets a gold or silver, we'll see a modest conversion rate of E.S.' The key will be continued success of former MLSers in Europe and then 2006 in Germany. If USMNT can equal 2002 (not an easy task in europe), the flood gates will begin to open...

Re: Re: Kezar will order the Shootout if we get enough interest...

In my ongoing "bring a skeptic to Spartan" program... I've basically converted one Englishman who understands that it's not the EPL, but it's a heck of a lot of fun... and a gal from Trinidad who grew up with the game and now loves the Quakes. Of course, she's only seen two matches. The most recent two home games. :)

Oh, and one Mexican... and two guys from Ecuador.

Progress comes in ones and twos.

Good idea, supersport. And the FO might think about giving a further infusion to the Troy Dayak panels at those Applebee's in Dublin, Livermore, Tracy (there are probably more locations, but I don't know them), etc. Quakes stuff for Troy (hey, those jerseys of his are from the 1992 Olympics!!!) and some input from Donovan and the rest of the present Quakes team. That would also include a brief seminar to all the Applebee's employees about who Dayak, Donovan, Walker and the rest of the Earthquakes are.
