The independent is reporting a 1 million pound bid for U-17 striker Kenny Cooper.

On a lesser scale, the News of the World also reports a £1 million offer from United to Dallas Mustangs for their 16-year-old striker Kenny Cooper, who is said to have made a big impression during a six-month trial at Old Trafford. The American-born youngster has an English father.

The kid has been at ManU for a few months now, and is seeing regular playing time in the reserves.

    Um....he's already signed by United, and he's 19, not 16. :)

    But then again, it's NOTW...

Maybe they are going for Szetela who is 16 and has been linked with United. But his parents are Polish and he is from Jersey. You gotta love the English press.

is it possible that Kenny has only been on trial for the past months that he has been playing for the reserves? that would make more sense, but obviously still wont explian the 16yo bit.

this just underlines the low quality in this field in england. The Szetela theory could work but they do say they kid´s name is kenny cooper is from texas and has a british father.

This kind of make you think that any one of us could go over to England and be the resident expert on US soccer.

There's no million dollar transfer fee, in fact no transfer fee at all. Kenny's wages are a million over three years.

6,400 a week is a lot for a reserve player!

Rats, I thought the Dallas Mustangs were getting £1 million for Kenny. You could buy a hell of a lot of orange slices and juice boxes with that kind of dough.

Kenny is apparently doing very well with the ManU reserves.

I've heard many forums/boards where fans said "who is this new Yank kid?" when he first arrived and after 2 performances are suggesting he could be one of the few who will actually make it to the senior squad.

He's even supplanted Ed Johnson in some games in the starting lineup and Johnson is highly regarded.

Kenny has definitely exceeded my expectations for him.

Maybe he'll be the next target forward for the US National Team and not Conor Casey? (hey I just like competition)

Yeah with that kind of scratch you could upgrade from Navel oranges to Valencias.

I also read somewhere that Manchester United are interested in Tim Howard, the former Metrostars goalkeeper. Anyone know where he is now?

If this is true, that would be a dumb move. He could never replace Barthez. Anyone who thinks Howard could replace him is just plain stupid and knows nothing about soccer.

    True!
Also, just saw they might be interested in this youth from California... Jovan Kirovski or something like that. I don't think he qualifies for a work permit though so while he can play for the youth squads, he may not be able to ever be moved up to the senior team. Then again, if he pans out maybe he could be sold to a German team like Dortmund or something like that.

Somehow I don't think they give us enough credit to even want to get it right.

Not to mention that he couldn't even keep his spot in New Jersey - they started Jonny Walker for the last half of the season over him!

I heard that he might be going to play in Chile....
But with Mike Amman on his way to NJ from Kansas City, things will be ok for New Jersey

    Amman?

I thought Tony Meola was going to be the first goalkeeper for the Metrostars.

When I first read the title of the thread, I was like "Holy Crap! This guys is in trouble." I felt embarrased for the thread starter for some reason.

It doesn't turn out as bad as it could have been. Although I had to cover my eye when I first open this thread.
