http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/05/arts/television/05pbs.html?_r=1&oref=slogin Kiss my balls. God, people will go to such lengths nowadays to be offended. Of all people to call a racist, Ken Burns? Really? This man has done so much to address race in EVERY film he makes. The slope continues.
Beyond stupid. As for a "national boycott", let's just say I don't see many PBS totebags in the barrio to begin with.
Perhaps Burns could talk about Miguel Sanchez, the Mexican scout on the Japanese front. He could detail the work Sanchez's company did with O'Malley, the explosives specialist; Sid Shineberg, the rifleman who reads; Contini, the hot-blooded Brooklyn Italian who pines for his sweetheart . . . . . . oh, wait, are we talking about Hispanic contributions in WWII or Hispanic contributions in WWII movies?
I am boycotting just because I thought the whole baseball deal was boring. What do you have to say to be about baseball, Kearns-Goodwin? Nada, ese.
Things weren't helped when Burns offered to add the rope climbing scene from The Dirty Dozen. You gotta make it past the parachute jump before you get a medal of honor.
I don't see it. The Hispanics did a good job in WWII. If the movie leaves them out in a way that most people would think unfair, then it should be addressed. I don't like the boycott idea, but I haven't seen the movie. Has anyone here? If not, then maybe some folks here shouldn't do exactly what they are accusing Baca of doing. Jumping to conclusions.
This is brilliant and this nugget The CHC needs to get back to work and spend thier energy on something actually useful for their constituents... http://www.concordmonitor.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060223/REPOSITORY/602230354/1031
The big issue for me in this is PBS' editorial independence, which is usually under threat by by GOP lawmakers.
I hope he then includes the experiences of Irish-Americans and Finnish-Americans in his documentary. Edit: which Latino group should Mr. Burns choose? As people on this forum know, there's a lot of difference between a Mexican-American, Cuban-american, etc.
It's an unimportant story. Let's be honest. The revolutionary change in perception of black people from pre WWII to post WWII is incredibly noteworthy. The road from slavery to reconstruction to WWI to WWII to the civil rights movement is one of the greatest revolutions in American history and the same metamorphisis did not occur with hispanics. Seriously, should eskimos be up in arms as well?
Not every program is The News Hour. There are shows like Now which come with a liberal slant built in.
Wow- maybe they should enforce latino content, if only to educate all the people who are completely ignorant of the latino civil rights struggle.
Maybe you can start with latino slavery for me. I'm not saying their wasn't a road to travel. It's just not as long of a road with as many bumps in it.
You said it was unimportant. 50 years ago, poor little oman wouldn't have been able to bang white chicks.
On the privately owned airwaves. When it is pubically owned, I would trust the board of directors to lean towards multiple sets of opinions but if it doesn't happen, eh. As long as Jim Lehrer's show, Nightly Business Report and BBC world news stay exactly the same, I'm cool.
