About 4 years ago I saw a forward play for Texas named Kelly Wilson. She was extremely explosive with the ball, and just had that knack for putting it in the net. I always wondered why I never saw her with the national team. Maybe she's too old for a look now, I don't know.

Anyone heard of her? Did she ever get a look?

I remember her from the 2002 U-19 team which won the world championship. I believe she was named to the all-tournament team as well.

I know she was on the full WNT roster at the 2005 Algarve Cup. Haven't heard much about her at the national level since. I think she's playing in the W-League this season.

if i remember correctly, she was getting some looks from the national team as recently as a year or so ago. she now plays under the last name "schmedes."

Thanks for the info. I saw her play several times in college and she seemed to bring a lot to the table -- pace, a nose for the goal, tremendous offensive footwork. She made something out of nothing repeatedly. But I know the competition is fierce. Still, you wonder why if she made all-tournament teams in international competition she didn't get a chance on the bigger stages.

I think some nagging injuries kept Wilson-Schmedes her from seeing more NT time. She was indeed great at UT, though, I saw her score plenty of goals. For the past two years, she has been volunteer assistant coach at Texas Tech, not sure how the new coach will affect that.

Do you have any details about her W-League play? I occasionally try to search for info on those teams, but their internet info is so horrendous that I usually give up quickly.

I didn't even know she had a different last name now. So no, I don't have any info on her W-league play. That's too bad about the injuries. She could really make things happen up front.

Looks like whatever injuries she had, she can still put it in the net:

"Schmedes, who had 11 goals in eight games for Charlotte in 2005..."

wilson-schmedes is the kind of player for whom a top class wusa II is vital for. let's see her up against the best players in the world every week, and if she has quality it will shine thru.

there are quite a few 'shannon boxxes' hidden throughout the nation.

she is a awesome player but playing in the W-league and scoring 11 goals is good but most likely won't get you any where. The new league coming would help her tremedously. In the w-league you play against some good teams but alot of them are very medicore.

If I recall correctly, she was also called upon to create a lot of opportunities on her own at Texas. Part of the reason she seemed so amazing was because she created something out of nothing off the dribble. She had a knack for splitting two defenders and using her explosive pace to get a shot, all on her own. When all your teammates are world class, I wonder how much those skills are valued. Not that she couldn't pass well or play a team game, but when I saw her play way back when she was just taking the ball and going, as the lone striker.

I still think she could be one of the best on the NT, if given a chance. It seems if she had gone to UNC, she would be starting on the team by now.

Hope she's given a chance and brings it in WUSA 2.

    no.

there are many players who went to unc who are not on the team, and there are many who did not go to unc who are on the team. she's just not up to the level of the current uswnt players in the minds of the coaches.

I remember her too. She was really gifted offensively with the ball. I too always wondered why she didn't get more looks at the NT level.

Soooooo, now we know the "path to stardom". Play for UNC. I know that there are plenty who didn't play for UNC, but it does seem that their players have gotten more looks than others. East coast bias strikes again!;)

Don't put us other East Coasters in the same boat with that comment. We don't all think UNC is the holy grail of women's soccer.
