Roy Keane has apparently issued a statement that he is retiring from International Football to concentrate on playing for Manchester United and....oh.... he stated medical reasons "officially".

Maybe it's also because the Irish Federation think they can do better without him.

    :D

Yeah, based on their proficiency in providing adequate training facilities and equipment for the World Cup I can definately see them thinking they didn't need Roy.

When I first saw the title of this thread I thought it was going to say Keano was a communist.

That's right once you play for Forest, you're always Forest. He's a red for life.

This whole thing about medical issues is just set up. If it were true, he would not be playing in the Worthington Cup and probably even the FA Cup. He is just a liar and at the end of the day, a rather weak individual. He tells Kerr last week he will return to play for Ireland, Fergie says "no way". Keane says "ok boss, whatever you say". That's what happened. F keane, I hope he gets a couple of more yellows so he can miss another Champions League Final.
BTW, I am a lifelong United supporter but also Irish. I was also a big fan of Keane but no more.

If quitting Ireland allows Keano to play a year longer for United, then sorry to Ireland.

Does 6 games over 8 months allows him to play a year longer?

It doesn't sound like much when you put it that way, but let me put it in this perspective:

Roy's had what, 4 surgeries in the past couple of years? OK, the latest hip injury can be very tricky as well. When you are playing in 4 different competitions and playing 2 or 3 times a week, rest is at a premium. Now, Roy, instead of resting has to go carry an Ireland team on his back in some far off country. So, while it would appear noble on the surface if he attempted this, it would surely have a negative affect on his playing career.

BBC article: The initial reaction of many Republic of Ireland soccer fans to Roy Keane's announcement on Tuesday evening that he had quit the international stage was one of betrayal.

Now tell me, why did he not announce his retirement last November or December when he came back after his injury? Surely his doctors told him before last Friday that "playing extra games" would shorten his career. Bottom line is that he told Kerr he would return, Fergie tells him not to.

Also, explain Fergie's comments two weeks ago about advising Keane to retire from international games and then today the club releases a statement saying both Fergie and Keane wanted him to return but the doctors said no.

First, could you please tell us the insidious reason you subscribe to.

Are you saying that Fergie has alterior motives other than wanting to give Keane the best chance to be fit for United matches? Or is Fergie supposed to be primarily concerned over what's best for Ireland?

Hmm... They're observant, aren't they? I think there should be a rule about players having to play both international and club ball. retire from one and you retire for good. Retire from international ball first, and you get shipped out to Dallas to play for the Burn for the rest of your natural life.Vive le AFC!

    PS- Good luck on Sunday...

If Arsenal show up on Sunday, they'll be playing to an empty stadium. ;)

The 5th round FA Cup matchup is Saturday morning here in the US. Too bad its not live on any US TV. :(

Just read Kevin Kilbane is saying the Roy Keane era is over and they don't need him anymore.

Well, thats good enough for me. As if we don't have to contribute enough international players

The irony of my last statement just hit me. An Arsenal fan criticizing the amount of money a football team has... Nice. :D

Thanks for the pat. Civilized people have just made another gain in football. You were quite the busy little bee on the Arse boards, you and Motterman both. What happened, couldn't take our thoughtful, witty and insightful refuting anymore? ;)
