Wanna hear something funny? This guy was working out with The Black Cats for about 2 weeks, and in one night, he signs for us.

    Thoughts on this move?

    Another midfielder! I'm so happy!

For the love of God Hoddle, the last thing we need is another sodding midfielder.

Not strictly true. The talk on 'other' Spurs boards has been about lack of investment by Daniel Levy in another striker and defensive midfielder. These are what we really need. Levy is banging on about 'lack of funds'. What better way to boost funds then by signing a slitty-eyed gook to send those shirt sales sky high in the land of the yellow peril? (Man, that sounds so racist, but it's actually more tongue-in-cheek then a lesbian orgy).

    Or maybe it's because;

Redknapp will probably retire or always be injured

Anderton (Bambi) is usually limping around with a groin strain.

Poyet is showing signs of age.

Ziege won't be back until he learns how to walk again.

Freund isn't being offered a new contract.

Acimovic. When Hoddle said 'He's the new Trevor Brooking' he actually meant in his commentating style. He blathers on about gibberish before senily talking about his days at 'Westahm' and with Ingerland.

Sherwood. Deadwood. 'I'm going to sue the club for not picking me!' He isn't helped by having one of the most odious agents of all time, Eric 'Monster, monster' Hall.

I hope this banzai boy is good. We need him.

I'm really glad you added this part. :D

I'm not sure exactly how Toda will fit in your midfield but in a word, he is a defensive pest. He is an extremely strong ball winner, aggressive almost to the point of being reckless. Toda's play in the defensive midfield freed his partner, Junichi Inamoto to roam forward and contribute to the attack.

Not sure if he fits your needs but his style suits the Premiership well and given the chance, he will do well in the league.

So is this dude any good ? I know he had red hair in the WC, but didnt they all dye it by the end ? I hope he is better than Imanoto.

If he is a defensive midfielder then thats exactly what we need. I was hoping for Lee Bowyer , even though he is more attack minded he knows how to get stuck in. Freund is our only defensive midfielder and, well basically he is pants.

Toda doesn't have the attacking skills that Inamoto has, but he rates higher as a pure defensive midfielder (the problem for Inamoto is that his coaches haven't figured out how to use him - Tigana gave him more attacking responsibilites at Fulham, which I believe is a mistake). He rarely gets anyone past him and he was one of the unsung heroes for Japan in the World Cup.

In a post-World Cup interview, a reporter asked him why he wasn't more cautious after he received a yellow card (he made several tackles that could have easily gotten him sent off). He responded that he never worries about the possibility of a red card and he would hurt his team more if weren't completely aggressive.

I think he would be a good complement to Davies, but we'll see how much action he sees and how he adjusts to the Premiership.

Yay! Skipshady, you don't understand! Sounds exactly like the kind of player we need! A defensive minded lunatic who is ultra-aggressive! It's the Tottenham way! (Ahem......).

Seriously, I really hope he's good. Hodd's judgement is occasionally well off the mark (See Eastern European signings) and Keano was almost definitely signed by Pleat (along with Davies, Etherington, Thelwell, Gardner...etc etc).

With Steffan 'Pele' Freund not being offered a new contract we need the lil' Jap boy. I expect there will be a lot more Jap fans at the Lane if Fulham are anything to go by after their acquisition of Inamoto.

Re-reading my previous post I do think 'slanty eyed gook', even in jest, a tad strong. I apologise to anyone who was offended.

And Foxhound, Freund isn't pants! The man is a WHL legend, what with his inability to pass or shoot, and his predispostion to run away from any fight he's just started. He's hilarious! His grip on the English language is not strong. When asked who he roomed with on away trips he replied 'I've slept with Willem Korsten...'. Which explains Korstens retirement at 28 through dodgy hips.

jumhed, you slay me!!! That bit about Freund was hilarious...

If Toda is the d-mid everyone is claiming he is, he should fit in well with the squad. This article says he has passed his physical and will complete the final aspects of the deal on Monday.

Skip, lets hope you are right about Toda. I look forward to seeing him down the Lane. My next game is Sunderland so that could end up as his home debut. After what he done to them though he'll have to watch his back

I hope he does well too. I'm tired of seeing English clubs signing Japanese players for marketing purposes (Nishizawa at Bolton, Inamoto at Arsenal) when there are more deserving players. But I think clubs have learned that players who don't see the pitch don't sell a lot of shirts.

The Japanese press is reporting that after negotiations with Sunderland hit a rut, Toda contacted Steve Perryman, his former coach at Shimizu and former Spur, and Perryman called up Tottenham and recommended him.

Sunderland went to training camp for a few days and left Toda behind. So i heard a rumor he was with Inamoto in London when they went into a bar Sherri goes to regularly and there were a bunch of Spurs players. they talked (Toda's been coached by Perryman and Ardiles and says Hod and Klinsmann are his favorite footballers) and Toda wanted to see WHL so Teddy said he could come by and maybe train. Hod sees Toda there (he'd been impressed by him at WC) and is impressed so he signs him. Don't know if its true but...
