Late to the party as usual but really can't believe this one. When I saw Kreis to NY I actually thought maybe we had a shot at getting Garth Lagerwey back in DC. Todays ownership must have the same thoughts as Payne when we were internet nuts. I felt this way during the season and chose not to renew after 12 seasons. The FO is totally clueless.
Garth still has a year left on his contract - the best we could do was let him know we'd want him next year if he was interested.
It was the early-to-mid-1990s when the Bosman ruling, the Champions League group stage, and the Premier League. The CL group stage, and the explosion of bonus money that came with it, created a permanent class divide within the Premier League between the clubs that expect to go there regularly and those who do not. Aside from the fact that CL clubs are never relegated and promoted clubs never really contend for it, the statement is otherwise untrue. Promoted clubs have finished in the top half of the table, and clubs as big as Newcastle have been relegated. The rest of the English soccer pyramid after the CL doesn't have those big gaps.
And newly promoted teams have the choice of how to spend all that big TV money once they reach the Premier League. Either (1) Spend that additional money on star players to stay in the Premier League for a few seasons and struggle to break even or (2) Spend as little as possible to give a good impression of trying, accept Relegation the next season, and take the money and run
That's not fundamentally different from the choice the Clippers or Wizards have. You can spend and actually try to compete, or just pocket the money. Only difference being that you'll stay in the top league, where you can keep taking the money and running for decades at a time.
