Agreed on S&G. And its comical how Celilia gets wypipo going. But damn, as soon as "You're breaking my heart!" gets sung - and that song is about St. Cecilia, the patron of songwriters, because they had writer's block... and all of a sudden I'm stuck in a hole of Caucasity. It's Pavlovian. Your comment on punk - I thought about how to best respond to this, because to a certain degree I think I agree with it and I think I understand the sentiment. But I don't think you can dismiss the very real influence that AA/West Indies culture had on the early punk rock movement. John Mellor isn't Avril Lavigne, know what I mean? Different strokes, and Joe Strummer could never, ever know the shit that the people he idolized went through - dude wrote a song called "Safe European Home" as a tongue in cheek reference to realizing as such after getting scared shitless in Jamaica - but black culture is absolutely fundamental to the core of punk. Ah, Kamala on the stump is cool too. I'll take it to the Music thread.
I'm a bit younger than you (I don't remember a jukebox at all) but your post was very evocative for me. I remember studying by the fireplace down there. Edit:
They are, but they're both mindless party stuff. You take out Angie and Paint It Black and Ruby Tuesday, you're left with party garbage. If I can't sit and take it apart, I should at least be able to sing along about how shitty things are. As banal as the Stones are, I admit that I think even less of the Beach Boys. Out surfing while folks try to register to vote...
I think I liked it because they sang of a life that I never got to experience - it allowed me to imagine what it would be like to be straight in high school - my high school years were very different. I also loved the ocean, playing volleyball, etc, so it fit that as well.
FTFY. Change that one word and you have MY life. The similarities are worthy of a study in conservatism. I won't pretend I know more than their hits. That said, they have a song with some disgusting lyrics about Black women. I really don't need to go deeper so that I can end up condemning them anyway for the unforgivable. They can make any songs that I'm willing to listen to, let alone love, is a testament to MY moral standards.
They have a lot of disgusting songs about women in general beyond that one (like Under My Thumb, Stupid Girl, Some Girls; that last one in particular is WAY over the top (so much that it’s actually pretty funny)). It’s probably their least appealing trait. Mick Jagger has since expressed regret about the tasteless lyrics to Brown Sugar, but it’s still part of who they were. But they’re far from just a party song band, even among their biggest hits you’ve got Sympathy for the Devil, Street Fighting Man, and Gimme Shelter. And all their albums from 1968-72 have great tracks beyond the hits.
Sympathy for The Devil was inspired by a fantastic book called Master and the Margarita by an author named Mikhail Bulgakov. It's dated, but it's still a great read. One poster that used to post here had a line from the book as their sig. I'm actually rereading it right now and it's still a great book to read, especially when you're at certain points in life or a crossroads. The Devil and his entourage visit the Soviet Union in the 1930s and just mess with people while showing that no matter what truth and love are always strong.
Marianne Faithfull gave Jagger that book. I'm obsessed with it, I read it in college at 20 and was just going through a weird time. I've reread it here and there. For most people it's Lord of the Rings, or if you're a Millennial, it's Harry Potter. Me? Master and the Margarita. Highly recommend reading it. It's a great book.
So, when the 'Kamala on the Stump' thread morphs into the Music Thread...that means we're all doomed, right? It's the end of the world as we know it?
Can you recommend a nice neighborhood in France? Seriously though, we might leave California, but we won't be leaving the country, regardless of who wins. Might move north to the PNW. Last night I did myself the disservice of watching some of those YouTube clips where some lefty person interviews people standing in line for a (random) Trump rally. I need to not do that again, too depressing. We are living in two entirely different universes, it doesn't matter what you throw at the red hats, it becomes part of their rallying cry (we all hate Talyor Swift! We're proud to vote for a felon! And on...and on...), must not do that again, makes me weep for this country...nothing amusing about it.
