People that are comfortable with me losing my liberties and rights based on a belief that my skin color is a flaw are racist. They don't know me but seem comfortable with me losing my rights so what does that make them? I just don't get why their is all this effort to see how they feel a d their side when they couldn't give a damn about me and wish me ill. It's all one way traffic. They can call me k************ but need to be understood. I call them racist and that's unfair. Makes sense
People think that if you are not a cross burner nor have sympathy for them then you are not a racist.
I stopped hearing the "be nice" argument when Charlottesville happened. Add that I watched a bunch of Trump voters storm the Capitol, which got a police officer killed on January 6. It'd be easier to take seriously if they also didn't try to kidnap Whitmer either. The being sympathetic argument might have made sense in 2016, but a lot has happened since then. And given that conservatives have been taking actions to roll back the clock well before Trump, it wasn't exactly a strong argument either. I should also point out that Trump supporters were swarming a Detroit polling area too. So yeah, calling them racist ain't a stretch. And bears reposting: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/january-6-2021-the-insurrection.2113286/page-2#post-39229917
I hesitate to disagree with you for obvious reasons, but how many Trump voters do you know, and did you know them before Trump? The ones I know have always had a dicey relationship with race. Maybe that’s NC vs. New York. But while we had Jesse Helms, y’all had Alfonse D’Amato or whatever his name was, and Giuliani. Anyone who doesn’t understand that the center of gravity in the GOP voting base has been racist since the 60s, well, that’s why Perlstein wrote Nixonland. They know he is racist, they just tell themselves some combination of racism isn’t important, plus “I want my tax cuts and/or pro-life laws” plus “what about anti-white racism.” That’s what we have learned since 2015…there has long been a debate about Republican voters, since Reagan. When they vote for racists, is it because they like racism, or because they just agree with Republicans on federalism and small government and the rest. Trump’s takeover of the party has put that argument completely to rest. When faced with an actual choice between full throated white nationalism vs. small government conservatism, it was like the movie Bambi vs. Godzilla.
@dark knight In the summer of 2016, conservative health care policy intellectual Avik Roy had his awakening. He had thought the party was about limited government, free markets, etc. a quick Google found this, but I don’t think this was the main article. It was something he wrote himself. There might be better info elsewhere, but I’m putting in the link as documentation. Remember, for the folks who post her a lot, this is old hat, like discussing Landon’s exclusion in 2014 or Freddy’s development or any other worn-out field. https://www.vox.com/2016/7/25/12256510/republican-party-trump-avik-roy And then there’s this https://www.amazon.com/Was-All-Lie-Republican-Became/dp/0525658459 I haven’t read the book, but Stevens is on TV or writing things all the time so I get the gist of it. That’s why I call “socially liberal, fiscally conservative” the pundit’s quadrant. That’s the default ideology of coastal elites, and those folks are all generals without an army. You may THINK a lot of Republicans are like that, but we had a real world experiment, didn’t we?
Could not have expressed it better, Bro. This whole pseudo arguments “ not all Trump voters are racists and calling them as such make them more supportive of Trump” in 2024, is truly mind boggling. SMH
Prior to Trump, there was a friend of my family, specifically my parents, that I kept a distance from prior to Trump. The catalyst? Around 2013, I was dating a lapsed Muslim woman (She wasn't religious but it was a part of her life). The family friend made a comment about bombing the Muslims, unprompted. I remember looking at my mother, who met my then gf, with a look that said, "Either the subject gets changed or I'll say something and it's not going to be nice. That conversation had me keeping way the hell away from this person. Once Trump got elected, I wanted nothing to do with them. Should add that Michigan had a guy named Orville Hubbard, who would make George Wallace blush with some of the things he said about race. And he ran Dearborn for over 30 years (1942-1978). His comments on Syrians, yikes. Not surprisingly, he was a Republican. Then there was L. Brooks Patterson, who was a country club Republican and even he'd say stuff that had people in disbelief. For me, the GOP's always been awful.
Totally agree. Frankly, I do not know what to make of Dark Knight's last statements. He said he does not believe Trump will try to overthrow the government, and he repeated this twice, so it was not just a slip. However, in 2020-2021, Trump did try to stop the process of the transfer of power and to prevent the winner of the elections from taking office. In a constitutional republic, the government is not just the president, but the entire constitutional structure of the state. By trying to stop the transfer of power and prevent Biden from taking office, Trump tried to upend this constitutional structure. So, what exactly should "overthrowing the government" mean if not this? And tolerance for the intolerant leads to the end of tolerance for everyone else. After the civil war, the North went easy on the slavers: the consequence was 100 years of Jim Crow. Besides, I asked before and ask again: where does one draw a hard line which cannot be crossed? Because that kind of reasoning, that "they see the world completely differently", could be extended to any kind of atrocity. It's not the liberals' fault that Trump supporters live in la-la land. They see the world differently all right: they believe the pandemic was a democrat hoax, that vaccines were a globalist plot to exterminate the world population, that Democrats want to "abort" newborn infants, that the Democrats brought 20 million immigrants to build an army for a civil war, that Harris is part of a communist plot to bring bolshevism into America, etc. As for the "holier than thou" attitudes of the liberals, the well-known "liberal" Dick Cheney did not mince words: "In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again. As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris". To expect Trumpers to clear a bar which even Dick Cheney was able to, is that so much to ask? The overwhelming majority of pre-MAGA Republican elites who no longer run for office have refused to endorse Trump. Of all the Republican on a presidential ticket, only Sarah Palin endorsed him. Bush, Cheney, Pence, Ryan, Romney did not.
Yes, you do. You do know what to make of them. Since Trump hit the scene, we've all learned alot of bad things about people we know. The hardest thing is believing the thing you already know.
Also we have several studies that show many people voted for Trump in 2016 because they were racist. There is no divorcing Trump from the illogical racial resentment of white people like my stupid uncles. If there was no racism, Trump never would have been President. This article from Vox references 3 of the studies: https://www.vox.com/identities/2017/12/15/16781222/trump-racism-economic-anxiety-study
I know you all are talking about racism & the GOP, but from a gay man's perspective, if someone votes GOP I immediately assume they are either outwardly or privately anti-gay and I prefer to have nothing to do with them. You can't tell me you are gay friendly if you vote for a party that knowingly and explicitly works to ban gays from marrying, adopting, teaching, living ...
I always see dumb people say Trump is pro gay and ignore that he put in many anti gay judges but also they have no answer when I show them this, he literally came out against marriage equality in 2016;
Oh...that is pretty much a given.....Racism, homophobia, misogyny and antisemitism )among others) all come with this (Maga) territory. Parts and parcels of the same package. That is why I often scoff when some are more concerned about antisemitism on the left while ignoring the massive red flags on the right. Case in point, the number two and number three podcasts on Apple this week are.... Tucker Carlson at No 2, then an obscure dude called Darryl Cooper. That Daryl dude is an holocaust denier and his podcast jumped to No 3 on the list after his interview with Tucker. Let's all guess who tweeted positive words about this Cooper crack pot and his interview with Carlson.....Yes, Elon Musk.
I have heard so many people say Hillary started the hollier than on behalf of the left and it went to the next level in 2016. The gloves were off. She called Trump supporters "A Basket of Deplorables" so from that moment, it was on. "Proud Deplorables" became a badge of honor. Yet at the same time, "How dare she?" "I will now become an actual deplorable because Crooked Hillary labelled me as such". I had friends, good people that fell for that, giving them an excuse to act like assholes. Heck, even Marek acted as if that was the trigger for him to gravitate toward Trump (SPOILER: It wasn't). Here is the thing. What she said was, "You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up." These Trump fans and Trump voters...at that moment, they had the choice to see which half they fell into. They got to choose. The half that just didn't like Hillary, her policy, blamed her for Benghazi or actually thought Trump would do a good job because; "The Apprentice". Or the other half; The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobics, etc... If you weren't any of those things...then guess what? She was NOT talking about you! Move on. So why is it that when Hillary said that, so many Trump voters thought that she was speaking directly to them calling them "deplorable"? Why did sooo many actually think she was attacking their character and their values? I think we know the answer. Many of those voters knew exactly which "half" they fell into. But, of course...both side, right? Sorry, @dark knight, you are wrong here.
If your excuse is someone/some asshole made you behave as an asshole the fact is you were an asshole from the start. You're white washing yourself with that excuse.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/09/06/harris-veep-boss-management/ Suppose this could be a media failure too but WaPo reporting on how Harris read her materials and came prepared with questions to her meetings, and staff found that so unfair and hard. Like ...I'm supposed to know this material well enough to converse about it with the VP? Media really is trying so hard to both sides us into fascism.
While this is more appropriate elsewhere, I post it here because of your comment. CNN being clear the orange fascist is a threat: Trump warns up for debate by threatening to jail election officials.
I can't find the link but I remember this was about 20 years ago in MBA School. In our ethics class they talked about how the same characteristics that men would say they liked in a male boss would then say they disliked in a female boss. Like a tough, No Nonsense, straightforward male boss good but a female one is the B word.
Trump is proposing ethnic cleansing. Great work everyone! Trump is now proposing two of the largest-ever federal arrests of people living in America, including U.S. citizens, if he's re-electedhttps://t.co/Kp45GcLipj pic.twitter.com/ppcFwLMIYE— Alex Thompson (@AlexThomp) September 8, 2024
People arguing against Harris do so with “she doesnt have interviews and town halls or an outlined policy thats why I want Trump.. Also why should we pick Harris she has no experience and shes VP she didnt fix the problems over the last 4 years.. No experience for Harris? Trump came fresh off the Apprentice with no political experience and got voted in, As far as policy and folks not doing anything in 4 years…Well Its hard arguing with a Trump/MAGA because even when they want to sincerely talk about liking his campaign vision and “promises” you have to constantly remind them that they are just dog whistles to get him votes and nothing more… Donald trump had four years to pass an infrastructure bill. He didn't. He had four years to "repeal and replace Obamacare". He didn't. He had four years to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. He didn't and they didn't. He had four years to lower middle class taxes, bring back the coal industry, eliminate the deficit, lower prescription drug prices, revive American manufacturing, protect people with preexisting conditions, end the opioid crisis, drain the swamp & "lock up Hillary Clinton". He didn't do any of that shit. None of it. So, how the hell could anyone think he'd do any of it the next time around???? The ONLY singular promise he kept was repealing Roe v Wade… well that and his more aggressive tactics against immigrants (oops misspoke, dark skinned immigrants)
