The empty, low-enthusiasm rallies do raise a question about whether voters were buying what Trump was selling or just vehemently rejecting what Harris/Biden had delivered.

Sounds like Trump voters didn't need to hear what he had to say live again.

As for Democrats, I am gonna go through each states numbers when they are complete to see where they didn't show up. Just eyeballing, at the end I think she will end up with ~71-72m . That's a big drop from Biden. Unfortunately it pumps the narrative that 2020 was rigged .. which obviously I don't buy.

    Kamala was not the problem.

Most of the people who voted for Trump in 2016, 2020, 2024 are the same group of people who get their information primarily through Murdoch's media empire.

Really? Because she certainly wasn't part of the solution.

Apparently we need some of those people in order to accomplish stuff that's important to us, no?

95% chance of Republicans taking the House.
That means they will be in control of all 3 branches of government

I call B.S. on your post. Kamala WAS the problem. She is untested. She has yet to win a single PRIMARY vote, and has basically coasted into all of the positions that she has held. And she chose a weird VP in Walz, whose serial lying was easily uncovered when he hit the national stage, unlike dark blue Minnesota whose media has run cover for him.

    may I add

    5. People were stuck in their homes during Covid lockdown going insane with nothing to do. They are angry at being cooped up in the middle of a pandemic, out of a job, people dying everywhere, and uncertain of the future. They go ahead and register to vote, because why not? Something to do. They take it out on Trump and cast their vote for the other guy.

2016 had about of 135 million votes cast for President.
2020 had just under 160 million votes cast.
2024 will probably end up around 145 million.

Where did all the Biden voters go? They were never really there for Biden in the first place. They were held hostage (during Trump's presidency) at home.

The last 4 years were just a fever dream.

In my opinion a big reason for this debacle is the relentless sanewashing of Trump in the media, going out of their way to normalize his awfulness to appear impartial.

This enabled him to put it all in full display and still not be considered a serious threat by the people that will now be threatened by his administration. Pretty much the same thing that happened in 2016 when people failed to be "inspired" by his opponent while ignoring or dismissing the unmitigated shitshow that was there for all to see. Except this time is worse, because at least in 2016 he was an unknown in terms of governing ability.

I was quietly suspecting that voters already bought what he's selling, and they felt no need to waste time attending the rallies. Looks like that was the case

10/7 was a direct byproduct of the Abraham Accords. That isn’t remotely close to factual in any meaningful way. If you stated that it was possibly a tiny factor at some point you might be onto something.

    I know you know better.

I'm not convinced that this is still true, in so far that it ever was. I now have to believe the majority of people who vote for him like the insanity, the absurdity, the rambling, the occasional profanity. No kind of media filter can still hide who this guy really is, in like year nine of his presidential aspirations and in his third cycle as the GOP candidate.

I tend to agree it wasn’t the medias fault. There have been countless disqualifying facts that haven’t dissuaded people from voting for him. Part of that may be down to distrust of the media.

You probably mean that it wasn't a direct byproduct. Yes I know that Hamas would do a Oct 7 regardless. Although when it was struck, it became an extra goal for them to nuke that deal. I am just using the same shallow rhetoric that the original poster is using.

I don't even think it's distrust, but more like being indifferent to the stuff he stands accused of.

I think the mirage was always that a great amount of people would find his misdeeds and criminal behavior disqualifying. I think the actual truth was that for many this was merely neutral in their perception of him and for some it might have even elevated his status.

I'm running on little sleep, but screw it.

There's a lot of things that need to be addressed, but for one: Harris ran a great campaign. The problem however, is the celebrity of Donald Trump. I legit think him being a part of the American consciousness since the 1980s is why people voted for him in 2016, 20, and 24. Even with the bankruptcies, the rambling, the awfulness of him, Trump was always seen as a symbol of wealth and power. And prior to his political run, he was everywhere. Home Alone 2, I remember learning about him through a Spider-Man comic of all things when I was 11. Hell, he's mentioned in The Sopranos even. Dude will go on any media if it means exposure. That, and people really think he's a savvy businessman. I saw a clip of a college student (ASU but that's not a surprise) saying she voted for Trump because he said he wouldn't touch abortion.

That said, there's two months till January, lot can happen. If any of you have seen Trump, he does not, I repeat, does not look good. If he buys the farm before January, that throws a lot of stuff in the air. Vance ain't exactly popular, and I think if it was Harris vs. Vance, there's a possibility that it might be a different story.

Naively, I think the right wing will do the usual, try to to do too much at once only to butt heads over something like the Ruff Tuff Creampuffs comic plays out. If Dems get the House, there's some hope.

As for those who voted for him, like Arabs, Latinos, women, young men, well they'll be in for a rude awakening if the leopards come for them. Gen X and Zoomers voting for him doesn't surprise me when those demographics make nihilism a personality trait. There is however, a young men problem that's been going for years. Yes, it's been played before but with things like Rogan, Tate, and a good chunk of fitness culture, it needs to be addressed. I also wonder if those young men turn out in droves if Trump isn't on the ballot.

As for the media, a good chunk of this lays on them, too. What with worshiping Trump, treating the Afghanistan withdrawal like it was 2005.

Anyway, I'm taking a bit of a break from politics for the time being. But will be doing what I can to get Dems in charge again. I'm white, in my 30s, and affluent, I'll be fine, but I worry for my friends who aren't.

There is an extremely anti incumbent mood around the globe since 2021, for good reason. Sometimes, geopolitical events, on a macro scale, far exceed what individual governments can control on a short term basis.

Inflation was not a uniquely American phenomenon. In fact, the US has handled it better than every other Western country on the tail end. But your average, everyday American doesn't give a shit about that, fir good reason.

The average American is buying a $100k truck with zero down and 15% interest while living in a Shelby Township McMansion and then wonders why they can't seem to get ahead.

A thing I did when gas prices were high was count how many people were driving needlessly large vehicles you can easily tell they didn't need. Talking Explorers, Tahoes, trucks. The highest I saw was 30 within a 5 mile radius of my home in the span of an half hour.

That's kind of irrelevant though. Inflation creates anger among entitled people faster than most.

Biden delivered nothing. Move along jimmy carter, you have been replaced as the worst president in recent memory.

Donald Trump won the popular vote. Time for us to nuke the filibuster and add 3 more seats on the supreme court.

It is relevant given that most Americans don't live within their means.

The thing is, the people I know complaining about inflation were also taking lavish vacations, getting DoorDash, and going out to eat constantly. I wasn't hit too hard by inflation because I wasn't paying ridiculous money for a truck or getting DoorDash. Hell, there was a Republican pollster complaining about inflation and his experience was ordering Outback Steakhouse on DoorDash for $125. And he was doing this for a family of four!
