According to radio reports and the London Evening Standard, Manchester United are about to make a significant bid for Blackburn's Irish international, Damien Duff, thus whipping away from under the noses of Liverpool. Talks started last week during the Dwight Yorke deal, and have apparently moved on since that time.
this is a b.s. rumor. We dont have the room or transfer money for Duff. Besides, he's way WAY over-rated, for sure not worth half the 20 million blackburn are asking. Sorry, but a striker who sprints down the field to hold the ball in the corner untill he's double teamed at which point he bitches like a brazilian for a call...fantastic stuff, worth 20 million easy.
What? When have we ever? I'm shocked and offended! I should amend the post: we already have a player who holds the ball in the corner untill he can bitch for a call and we spent twenty EIGHT million on him.
Denial... http://www.soccerage.com/en/13/g1831.html So, whose news is right? Love that rumor mill....
Good...Duff needs to stay put, Rovers is putting together quite a stable of strikers with Jansen, Yorke, Cole, and Duff. Granted, Duff will probably see more time on the wings, but he has the ability to play up top as well. Now, if only Rovers would sign their former trialist Josh Wolff...
Man u don't need duff - they just need to get veron to bugger off and play 4-4-2 instead of experimenting and they will walk the league >
Firstly, he is not a striker, but a left winger who can play a bit up front, and secondly £20m is not too much for him. If you saw him playing for Blackburn last season, you'd understand. But then he doesn't play for Brazil and Real Madrid, so he is obviously not very good.
He's going to be as good as Rivaldo, Beckham etc his potential is that great. A high fee also gives the signal that we're not going to simply roll over and sell our best player on the cheap, just because bigger clubs want him.
2 Points: 1) In a year or two we will know if he is worth the 30 mil. 2) With transfer fees out there for Zizzou and the like, is any player worth millions and millions?
Whatever. I'm going by primarily what I've seen of the Ireland side over the past few years, so that's why i'm calling him a striker (and that is where ManU would use him). His style is not worth 20 million and I've thought for the longest that he's not too good of a team player, very loving of the ball. Really, before this last WC, who would possibly think near 12 million for him, let alone 20?
We can speculate, but we don't need to. And it's got nothing really to do with the financial state of the game, either. Last year, United won exactly nothing and most people would agree that the centre of the defence was the major reason. If Rio comes in, United win the European Cup and/or the Premiership, he'll have been worth it. Simple as that. Why? Because no matter what anyone else is paying for players anywhere else, United will have made more money as a result of the signing than they'll have spent on it. In which case, it'll have been a good deal. The goal here is pretty simple: Thirty pieces of silver for a few peices of silverware, really.
ireland didn't have that tough opposition so he should have shined - they did decent but opposition was a bit lacking.
If a player improves your already very good team, then any price (hypothetically) is worth if you can afford to pay the price. If you haven't the money and you still buy him then it isn't worth it (Fiorentina). ManU is a pretty astutely run business, so I'm guessing it was worth it. Which, of course, is a pisser.
