I'm not criticizing the restrictions -- they've been necessary to league's business model, although the training wheels are slowly coming off -- I'm just saying they exist, they are substantial, and they have a significant effect on how clubs value players w/r/t transfers.

I personally think it'd be worth MLS' time to loosen some of those strings when said debt-ridden European clubs and leagues start imploding, might be nice picking up some nice players on the cheap.

I was actually wondering, how is Agudelo paying to stay in Germany? I doubt he makes anything decent his first year in the MLS and moving to a new country could get expensive. Is Agudelo getting paid to train with Stuttgart? If so then that would make sense financially for Agudelo to go train in Germany.

    Maybe USSF is financing this.

He made $85k this year. That's "something decent."

My guess he is getting much of this covered by VfB as a favor to JK. They have a youth program so he might be staying in the youth facility with room and board. He would have had to cover airfare and other expenses which, on $85,000 and single, does not make it a big cost.

For a young kid it is a decent salary. No, it is not what other sports rookies make but is a helluva lot more than most college grads would make livign in NYC.

um, not really. you can't compare Agudelo to an newly hired art gallery assistant or school teacher. He's highly recruited talent (think Ivy-school with internships & connections), earning performance-based bonuses, more like a jr. investment banker/trader, or internet biz dev manager or ad salesman. For those guys - even at 22/23, 85k for a job in NYC is the basement not the ceiling. May be a lot of $$ elsewhere in they country for entry level but definitely not NYC.

anyway, for a training stint like this, Id be shocked if he had to pay a penny for anything. Either RBNY, his agency or Stuttgart should be footing that bill, not the player.

$85k for an entry level trader with connections is an avg. There are highs and lows, but on avg that's it. Check the data from 2010 hires online and you will see even they say $85k is avg unless your mommy/daddy have connections or you are a top ivy league pick.

85 K? Whoa. Suprised he hasn't left MLS by now especially with all the hype surrounding him for the past year.

That's because NYRB would have to sell him.

Juan is at the upper end of MLS HG player salaries.

    it's fine.

plus he probably saves on housing, so I would say he is doing fine financially.

Stuttgart will provide board and lodging, and probably a car, so the costs will be just the flight, and whatever a young guy wants for spend for whatever. He won't have to pay the coaches.

I really have no idea: Can a player like Agudelo make some money with advertising and promotions in the US?

considering his face is all over adidas and MLS promos, i'd say he's pulling in at least 5 figures a year in endorsement money.

I don't think Agudelo would make millions, but I'm sure he's making a few bucks from a shoe deal. Isn't he in adidas ads?

Right now he is one TV screens here much more than players like Clint Dempsey, but ironically he'd probably be less valuable if he moved abroad.

I love that commercial because Kaka's bit is filmed with actors and a green screen.

Let's hope he doesn't actually believe he deserves to be in a video with Messi. We don't need Adu II.

This airs around 100x during every soccer game shown in the United States.
    I am not exaggerating.

This Pepsi ad has been on every other PATH* car I get on daily for the past 4-5 months. Juan, flanked by 3 other Colombian stars and Omar Bravo. I have also seen this ad all over north Jersey and in Newark's Ironbound neighborhood
