U23 left back Ian Joy was selected by the Columbus Crew in the supplemental draft today. He was 1 of 3 players taken in the draft and the only one young enough for a youth national team. He gives Myernick another left back to look at in MLS along with Ricky Lewis, Jose Burciaga and Seth Trembley, who it appears it playing a lot of MF for the Rapids this spring and may eventually settle in there. Burciaga, who has played left back for the 23s in the past, is apparently having a great camp for KC, as a central defender. And, of course, there's Bobby Convey, Tron's favorite left back candidate! (Just joshin' ya there, DT!)
i think it was jsut these three available. I think the way it works is, a team looks at aplayer, decides they want to sign him, and then, "drafts" him. I guess it has to be this way since the league is signing him and not the team. Ian Joy is a really decent sort. He was in his own words, having a "nightmare" when MLS put his contract on hold due to some questions with his medical ath the Combine (he said it was from a five-year old injury, that he had played something like 300 matches since then). Obviously the Crew were satisfied with his fitness. A fullback who is accustomed to playing fullback can't be such a bad thing to have as part of the player pool, hey?
I think he's getting a bad rap about not playing in the 3rd division. IIRC when the coach they had the previous season employed attacking fullbacks he was seeing time, and I think they were in the 2nd division at that point. Either way he's got more experience than your typical 21 year old college boy who isn't a youth nat.
