That's Just Gros! DC drafts Josh Gros from Rutgers. 16 goals, Big East player of the year. The games I saw him in on CN8 I remember him being sort of a punk but always in the mix.
I'm not really impressed with this pick at all! There was a recent article in the paper (Harrisburg Patriot News) about this "local" boy trying to make the pros and I felt that last year was more of a fluke than pure skill after reading the article. I think he started out as a defender and when his team was having trouble scoring they moved him up front just to mix things up and that is where he stayed. I believe Gros even stated "it seemed like the ball went in every time I hit it". Just seems more like a scrappy player than one to beat defenders with his skill. I would be very suprised if he makes the final cut. But then again, I hope I am wrong and he scores like D. Ralph!
Well I just hope that Gros can score as many goals for DC United as another scrappy player from Rutgers by the name of Steve Rammel! IIRC, Gerd Muller was considered a scrappy player! A goal is a goal is a goal...
I found this article on Gros. It's an interesting read. http://www.scarletknights.com/news/spotlight-story.asp?ID=57 That may explain a bit about why neither DCU nor I noticed him at the combine. I don't know what to make of him. Hopefully someone who knows more will come along and fill us all in.
We had a player like this - he went by Stevie Rammel and he was one of the best finishers DC had. Sometimes the ball finding you is a better skill than beating people off the dribble.
I don't know a whole lot about him. The only reason I was really so hyped about this guy was because my cousin went to a Rutgers soccer game (she attends Rutgers) and said he was the star and was really good so I became interested. Also this same cousin's good friend and roommate is good friends with Josh. So, maybe I can somehow get him onto here (Bigsoccer).
Well, Alan Shearer is also a scrappy player, and look at what he's done in his career. I think that's something D.C. United has been missing - a tough player who can score goals in the box, and hopefully is strong and good in the air. A player like that paired with one of our many creative forwards is exactly what we need up front. If you look at the great D.C. teams in the 90's, it was Moreno (creative forward) paired with either Steve Rammel, Raul Diaz Arce, or Roy Lassiter, all goalscorers. Then again, if he doesn't score goals and just roughs defenders up, then I agree, it's not an impressive pick. To be honest, I'm not expecting all that much from him. These picks usually seem to just not pan out. I hope I'm wrong though. - Ryan P.S. Anyone know anything about Kevin Hudson?
