Because that would be logical and rational rather than unreasonable and impulsive. That's just not the way Roman rolls.

Chelsea has more than enough talent to make it out of any group. My one question is how will the players react. This is a huge test for Terry.

I don't see how players like Drogba, Lampard, and Terry can really play as hard for Avram Grant than they did for Mourinho. Yes, they should do so because they are getting paid millions, I know. But Mourinho backed those 3 and others in every way possible, on and off the pitch. They seemed to have a very close player-manager relationship. There is NO way that will happen with Grant, no way. From what it sounds like, the players had no respect for Grant the instant this "director" position was created - why would they now?

I think Terry will stay at the club for sure. He has been at Chelsea for his entire career. Lampard and Drogba, on the other hand, I'm not sure about. Lampard hasn't signed his contract, and I'm pretty sure he said this summer that his future at Chelsea was tied to Jose's. Drogba has also mentioned a desire to play in either Spain or Italy - this could spur that.

Carvalho will be gone I think, along with Lamphoon the whale and Drogba, possibly Essien as well.

On Skysports its saying the players dont want to be near stamford bridge without Mourinho there.

I wonder, first and foremost, about Drogba in this situation. Will he be forced to play alongside Sheva, a tactic that hasn't worked?

Will he be benched in order for Sheva to have the reigns?

Will his desire to play abroad lead him to leave at the end of the season since Mourinho is gone?

I can see Drogba moving on as he had Mourinho's full confidence. I imagine that others like Terry and Lampard will stay. I don't expect a mass exodus unless the team really starts to fall apart. With all that talent, I don't expect it to happen.

    Exactly.

Aside from Drogba and possibly the Portuguese players, I don't see anyone else going due to this. Not Lampard. Not Terry. Some players might just see their careers "revitalized."

This may be good for Joe Cole as well.

Had Lampard signed on to a new contract yet?

Nope. I think he is a potential candidate to leave. I may be wrong, but didn't his Chelsea/England career bloom during the Mourinho years? He had his first good season under Ranieri, but really came out as a player under Jose. That's why I think he may be out at the end of the year.

If Lampard leaves then he has to go to Spain or Italy. Would any top team there take him given that his technical ability is lacking?

Thanks for the info. His career took off when Ranieri signed Makelele. Without him and now Essien he's even less average then he is with them.

That's what I'm wondering. If Roman wants pretty passing football I can't see him making much fuss if foreign clubs start bidding good money for fat Frank. That way they could get an actually talented passing midfielder in there. It will be interesting to see where Ballack plays into all of this. Who knows, we could actually see him come good.

I thought Juve had made an offer for him this summer. He definitely is a blunt instrument of a player, but he does get his goals and maybe an Italian team would take him on.

I think this is best for Ballack. He will get back into this team, which is good because I struggled to come up with another destination for him if he were to leave Chelski in January.

His lack of technical ability would not help him in Spain.

Just think about how out of place he'd look alongside Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Deco, Xavi, etc. If Mourinho gets a Champions League job soon, I wouldn't be surprised to see Lampard follow. Valencia is one club that people are saying has a manager under pressure (Quique Sanchez Flores), and maybe Inter?

Juventus is a good club for Mourinho. They play slowww footy and love the pragmatism of tactically dour games.

He'd never get criticised there for the footy he brings with him.

Having said that, his Porto side that won the Uefa Cup with Deco and co, was capable of some very, very good football when they weren't feigning injury or diving about.

Grant is similar to Mourinho in his tactics. Both are defensive managers who like to play organized football. The only reason Grant is in there is because he has a close relationship with Roman, and he will do whatever Roman says in order to keep his job. That being said, Sheva will start for sure now, although I dont really see Drogba being dropped. Lampard might finally have his place threatened, but not until Ballack is back.

Trust me, Grant is a very defensive coach. I followed Israel very very closley in the world cup qualifying and stats dont lie. They were undefeated and drew most of their games, only beating mediocre teams. But this is kinda different because the Chelsea squad actually have the talent to go for wins. I can see Grant also going for the draw against us away, because he wont wanna lose, but after that I feel we will see his true tactics.

Are the reports about Schuster being unhappy at Real Madrid true? According to some reports, he told a German TV station that he doesn't he will keep the manager position beyond a year despite Real's early season success. One reason being that he does not think ownership likes his style of play. Now with Jose leaving Chelsea, perhaps Schuster has more to worry about.

    Chelsea fan in peace.

I rarely ever comment on other boards besides the Chelsea one. I have to admit I actually enjoyed reading your comments regarding Mourinho's exit. They seem to much more sensible than some of the "Leeds Doomsday" or "gun in the mouth" comments some of the bandwagoners on our board are spewing. The opinions expressed here actually line up more closley with mine; Mourinho's firing may be (in the long run) a good thing for Chelsea. We may actually see what J. Cole, SWP, Ballack, Sheva can actually do.

Best of luck Sunday, just not too much.

Could be akin to Henry leaving Arsenal? In a way, Jose was like a 12th player on the pitch. At least that is how I always saw him.

This may be a good thing for Chelsea in the long run, but it's a great thing for ManU in the short run, specifically this Sunday. After you guys thrash Chelsea 5 - 1, somebody needs to give Abramovich a game ball.

Mourinho's departure has put a very large dent in my hopes for the 1-1 draw....

And, yes, it's great to be back. Father Ted, I assume our wager will be in place when the time comes, no???

All they remember is Porto sitting back and trying to hit teams on the break, with a hefty dose of diving to boot. That final against Celtic was a disgrace, with Baia rolling almost half the length of the pitch. They you obviously have Deco...
