Here's one out of the blue. He's 23 and apparently scored in his B2 debut for 1860 against Aue. Seems he has a Greek father and a German-American mother, according to this article: http://www.bild.t-online.de/BILD/sp...6/1860-holebas/loewen-chance,geo=3490728.html A 1984 born in Germany.
This one's a stretch-- can he qualify for US citizenship? Was his mother a citizen or daughter of a citizen?
If his mom's eligible, I feel like he would be eligible too--provided that she actually went ahead and got hers first. I'm not sure, though--you see cases like this more often in countries where citizenship is conceived primarily through bloodlines (Germany, Italy, for example).
If his mom was a citizen when he was born, then he's one too, right? (Or, I guess, if she became one before he was 18?) Of course, there's probably no way of finding this out without firsthand info -- I doubt these details are reported anywhere. I'll poke around a bit. And maybe someone else, like U.S. Soccer or a soccer journalist, will look into it too.
It would be nice to have any confirmation. He has been converted to LB this season and is being observed by Bundesliga, Specifially Mainz 05 and Nurnberg FC.
Just a really, really, really fast guy? (who can kill you with brain farts) Really, the guys to try to get are Fabian Johnson and Daniel Williams.
So he's at the top club in Greece, and plays LB... What am I missing other than our confusion as to whether he can get his citizenship. Surely we can at least get a look at the guy.
Yeah no kidding, Dave did you ever figure out the eligibility with this kid or what? He's still pretty young and I mean, Olympiakos is a good side if he started getting minutes.
Well, of all the foreign-born players I have on my list this is probably the one I'm least sure about. A 2008 (German) article said his father was Greek and his mother German-American. That's what inspired the original post. But Wiki says he's Greek-Uruguayan. Other web posts seem to indicate that his mom may be German-Uruguayan. Olympiakos doesn't say. It's possible that the writer of the 2008 article essentially heard "South American" and heard "American" more or less. Anyway, I'm thinking I may pull him back to the "not sure" list until someone can set me straight.
In order to have a picture in this thread, this is him (#14) playing for 1860 last August against Paderborn in the first round of cup play
