3 saves (2 diving) and a shutout on 0.6 xGOT for Klinsmann in a win over Pisa (first place in Serie B). One of his biggest matches in quite some time. Distribution stats stink, but attention should be rightly focused on a very good shutout. Could use a thread title rename: Jonathan Klinsmann at Cesena @bungadiri @dark knight @TheFalseNine
That's his 2nd appearance since joining 7-8 months ago and and Cesena still have the the same 4 GKs as they had in February. One of those is 19 and still eligible for Primavera competition, but the other made 3 league appearances when the starter was injured last season and he started 2 cup ties. If he starts the next round, we'd have to say that Klinsman has displaced last season's backup to become the #2 at a newly-promoted Serie B side. Edit: Sorry to disappoint @tomásbernal
Klinsmann with a surprise start in a 1-1 draw with Salernitana today, saving two shots and conceding one, with middling ratings in the match report if my Italian serves. The #1 Pisseri was healthy enough for the bench and had a shutout over the weekend, so I don't have an explanation of Jonathan getting the look.
Without access to Italian-language media the most likely explanation is illness or a knock. Pisseri was benched 3 times in the final 4 games of last season and was at least rotated for Klinsmann in this season's Copa match. Since there's a new coach this season, it's unwise to read too much into this but Klinsi Jr. looks like the club's #2 for this season
And here is the explanation the manager gave: https://www.tuttocesena.it/spogliatoi/mignani-sul-tema-portieri-pisseri-per-me-e-un-titolare-34312 "For me, starters do not exist," says Mignani. "If they did, it would mean that someone is higher up in the hierarchy. I try, with my limitations, to look at everyone's weekly work and try to make the best decision. Today the choice went to Klinsmann, but for me Pisseri is a starter because he brings both experience and certain values to the group. I would like to move towards the idea that even the goalkeeper, who historically is considered to be a [fixed?] role, moves towards healthy and fair competition that can continuously stimulate them."
In Plain English: Pisseri wasn't looking too hot and I wanted to see what Klinsmann can offer. So far, I like what he brings a bit more but if Pisseri recovers form, he'll start starting again.
Or maybe, Pisseri wasn't seeming too motivated, and our #2 isn't such a drop off that I can't light a little fire... but maybe sitting pisses Pisseri off so much he pisses off completely and leave Klinsi as true #1. Yeah, I'm just taking the piss...
That's his 5th league start in a row so he's the new starter. Him being 1st choice has led to/coincided with an upturn in form: P5 W2 D2 L1 - 4 Conceded with him between the sticks versus P5 W2 D1 L2 - 8 conceded with Pisseri. They're up to 5th place but 10 points off the automatic slots.
