Can't think of anyone prolific. I do think about Teal Bunbury and how he must feel. I remember the tug of war with Canada for him and, ultimately, how he came to the U.S. side only to play in a few matches. Last cap came a while ago. He could have had a decent career time with Canada I bet, but I haven't watched him play in a loooong time. It would be hilarious if Gonzalez came back this way, but I highly doubt it.
He'd have to only have played 3 games, and wait 3 years after his last game to be eligible for this new switch rule. EDIT: I see someone else already beat me to it. EDIT 2: This rule change seems like it is mostly drawn up for marginal players for the best national teams to have a chance at international soccer after limited interest from their first national team (I'm thinking there might be a bunch of Brazilians, Argentines, English, German and French players that fit the bill--high-level National Teams with plenty of players with alternate nationalities).
People are freaking out because they're imagining USMNT losing Mexican-American kids to El Tri. But what seems more likely is someone we decided wasn't good enough for us later gets an opportunity to play for Jamaica or Haiti or something. You could also see how it might benefit us with, say, a German-American player who got 10 minutes in a Euro qualifier when they were a hot prospect, only to have their development stall due to injury or just not reach German NT levels..
I think you had to be a dual citizen at the time you were getting capped. So, Fagundez and Jack Harrison would be out. Too bad, in Harrison's case. If he had waited, he'd have been a regular for the USMNT.
The new proposal takes that into consideration: The player: i) was fielded in a match in an official competition at any level (with the exception of “A” international level) in any kind of football for his current association; ii) at the time of being fielded for his first match in an official competition in any kind of football for his current association, he did not hold the nationality of the association which he wishes to represent; Proposal for amendments to the Regulations Governing the Application of the Statutes 5 iii) at the time of being fielded for his last match in an official competition in any kind of football for his current association, he had not turned 21 years old; Diego was about 17 when he last played for Uruguay. Jack Harrison probably isn't a Green Card holder any more, so that ship has likely sailed (unless he comes back to MLS in the future).
Funny enough, if this new rule change takes place then Gonzalez will again meet your definition of Yank. Edit: now that I've read Boston Red's post it seems like Gonzalez won't be eligible after all since he held US nationality before playing for Mexico. But i think he hasn't played an A international yet so maybe he is? It's all confusing.
Wiki which is wiki states he has 3 caps with the big club. His first appearance was 1/31/18 against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This looks like a move so Qatar can naturalize guys that had been cap tied before the WC https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dudu_(footballer,_born_1992) like this guy for example
I'll warn you that there are a bunch of other scenarios including the one above, but I didn't see one that would apply to Gonzalez now.
Didn't have much of a season this Apertura. Appeared in 7 matches for 62 minutes total. Longest appearance was 18 minutes and last appearance was September 15th. Last made the bench the 27th of September. https://www.transfermarkt.us/jonath...32764/saison/2020/wettbewerb/MEXA/verein/2407
every player's career is at the whim and discretion of their manager. no player writes their own name on the lineup card. no player has the option of jumping whenever they wish to any other team they want, either. all of these things are true, yet people still write off players who dont play as not good enough or bad etc..... in general, it is true...the best players tend to make and play....but it is far from an objective process.
no im just generalizing. perhpas if orlando had bought higuain...there would be no euro interest in Dike. or perhaps if efrain alvarez was playing as a starter for LAG ths year there would be more interest in him etc
A coach can make or break a player's career. Lletget is a perfect example. He can be an above-average MLS player or he can be an integral part of the national team. Important enough to fly him across the Atlantic to play him out of position.
not to mention stuck on the bench of west ham for life prompting the move to MLS in the first place....
Funny to think about the months of hand wringing we all did in retrospect, now that our midfield is oozing with world class talent.

It’s kind of sad, but I genuinely wonder what his career would be like if he was in MLS. Liga MX has shown to be a horrible place for youth. Gonzalez was and is a rangy DM, with good enough ball skills to go along with top notch defensive ability. He’d definitely have a fighting chance to be Adams’ backup if he were still in the program.
I'd take him back with the USMNT. Would I start him? Of course not. And he'd need to earn it with his club team, first. But if some FIFA rule change allowed him to switch back AND he was playing well, yeah, I'd let bygones be bygones. Kid got sold a bill of goods by the El Tri people and all sorts of pressure to please his parents and his employers and the fans of his employers and what not. Whose to say any of us in similar circumstances wouldn't have done the same thing. So if he wanted to come back and could come back, I'd have no issues with it. The USMNT has made a LOT of strides since he made his switch decision, but it's still not so good where it couldn't use a reserve central mid with the experience and skillset JG has, especially in a year where there are so many games to be played. Again, it's all hypothetical right now because there's no FIFA rule that will allow him to switch back. But if there were, I'd encourage it. And I wish the kid no ill-will He made a decision he thought was best for his career and to best take care of his family. Right or wrong, hard not to respect him for doing what he thought was best.
It's a cautionary tale for our Mexican American kids not to start in Liga MX nor commit to their national team because they'll always be vi He clearly was a good player, already at 18. Then he lacked in opportunities. So maybe if he could get out of there he could rejuvenate his career. And yes I suppose I would take him back. It was a betrayal, but he was young. He also could potentially help the team depth-wise. I do think under the new rule to counteract predatory capping of youth he does qualify for a two-time switch.
