Atlanta bound? Hearing Jonathan Gonzalez is on the radar of @ATLUTD and another @MLS team during this summer transfer window with decision to be made fairly soon if it happens. #MLS— Taylor Twellman (@TaylorTwellman) July 24, 2020
i feel bad for him tbh though from a usmnt perspective this is the best possible outcome - you dont lose a world class player to mexico and you have exhibit a to dual nationals about what el tri promies - whether imagined or real - during recruitment guarantees
Lol ask William Yarbrough what the USMNT promises, or Edgar Castillo or whichever dual national. The thing is no dual national has ever been great for either side.
yarbrough is completely irrelevant to this conversation? he played u20 for mexico and then nowhere for el tri until getting a usmnt cap almost 10 years later. castillo is honestly a better example for why jona would want to return to the usmnt if fifa alowed it?
Yeah Castillo got about as extensive a run of opportunities for the USMNT as I can imagine any player of his quality receiving.
so when he declared for Mexico that did not tie him to Mexico because he isnt cap tied. So now he could do a one time switch? Is that what this is about?
Gonzalez can't come back under current rules because he filed a one-time switch after being provisionally cap-tied by the US. And, FWIW, Yarbrough isn't cap tied to the US, so he could conceivably return to play for Mexico.
it never seems to fail though. whenever one of these duals gets into some type of heated debate about where to play.. the ones that didnt work out for us never really seem to do much. Is Rossi the only one who ever really became a star? Someone said that Trent Alexander Arnold could have played for the USMNT but truthfully it doesnt really ever seem to hurt us when it doesnt pan out. Like this dude who is doing relatively nothing (of course its unfair to single him out while NT arent even playing). EDITED TO FIX ROSSI'S NAME.
I thought Gonzalez was heavily recruited by Mexico after his breakout season with Monterrey. He really had all the time in the world to decide but his family pressured him to switch and the rest is history.
Even Subotic and Rossi have had difficulties. Although the US national team would gladly have a center back who is a backup at Dortmund or playing at St. Etienne and Union Berlin, Subotic was on a much higher trajectory before he turned 25. While Rossi has been wrecked by injuries.
This could have been one time when *not* having a player provisionally cap-tied might have worked out better for us.
