Not a true one but good enough for teams that will bunker in the azteca. As a youth he was a ball winner he has decent ball winning skills. With a mid of HH Jona and Guardado at home we don't need a Gallito or Guemez. Guardado and Jona are hustlers who can recover the ball. The challenge is breaking bunkers which Jona's passes can facilitate.
Having Jona hanging between the CBs with primarily defensive duties is going to help Mexico break bunkers? Wouldn't having him further up the field and closer to goal actually help break the bunker?
The way these teams park the bus he can move up close enough at times to put in over head passes to the forwards. Guemez and Gallo don't have the vision and distribution skills to do that. Just don't see the need for a true destroyer when we play at home when Jona is good enough and will have opportunities to push up and start attacks at times. I expect Osorio to use Rafa as Dmid, but he just can run like Jona anymore. Having three mids like HH Guardis and Jona makes it easier to create and break bunkers.
Actually in bunker situations I wouldn't mind Guardado as CDM in s 433 with Jona and HH creating our chances. They are better at creating than Guardado.
He has the qualities to play pivote and repartir like Pardo did. His lacks the quickness to be a class box2box. So as the 8 he is out for me. Either the 10 or the 6 is where I'd slot him
What a breath of fresh air this guy is. We've had too many overachievers (guys with limited to average talent like guardado and chicharito who are hard workers) and underachievers (players with extraordinary talent who never lived up to their potential like Vela and Gio) for the past couple of years and Jonathan could be that one guy who can reach world class status coming out of Mexico. Love his dedication and vision
Pardo was terrible defensively and it's a reason why he was brushed aside after Aguirre took over. The 2009 HEX saw him get replaced by more mobile and physical players. Not sure why people insist on shoving Jona in there when, at the CONCACAF level at least, you need a physical presence there, not a quarterback.
I had the same view as you but his gold cup performance won me over. He can definitely pay that role.
