From http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/ It's a taped interview that's running, so it's unlikely they are overstating what the announcement is. It's interesting that he's apparently going to make the announcement on Canadian TV. Everything we've heard for years is that he would be choosing Holland, not because of the competitive difference between the two countries, but rather because of a beef the family has with the CSA. As a Canadian, my bias is clear, but as a realist I suspect Holland will gain a prospect Sat. Still, it is interesting that he's making the call on Canadian TV.
Well I'm glad that some Dutch hope we can get him for our national team; I'd be thrilled. We need all the talent we can get, and with him on our midfield, it could be quite formidable. However, it really was Holland who took him in and developed his talent so whatever he chooses is legitimate. Anyway, here's hoping he chooses Canada and, along with his brother, helps us achieve a berth in the WC because really...you guys are already pretty much in! Finally, a decision!!!
Thats not true, he has dual citizenship. He can only play for one country though TBH, nobody here in Canada gives a rat's ass about him or soccer (although that is changing a bit). When he picks Holland you'll hear a collective yawn across the country, followed by the channel changing.
You are once again wrong Amsteldam, but that´s normal. He is only Canadian and has apllied for Dutch nationality and to become Dutch he has to renounce his Canadian. If you don´t believe it google for Don Niccols
I am always right. But I am for one have some more sources then you do Once De Guzman is Dutch he can´t play anymore for Canada, the same happened for example to Trezeguet or Asamoah.
I have been hearing conflicting reports on this subject, but if you are correct and he would have to renounce his Canadian citizenship to gain his Dutch passport, then I don't think he would go ahead with the whole thing. Even though he has been there since he was 12, I doubt he would ever renounce his Canadian Citizenship. Just seems so strange to me that he would go this far with the whole matter just to find out now that he cannot have both.
I don´t know the exact laws for the Canadian citizenship but I am sure he can get it back(he is born there) once he wants to move back. He has been stupid because he could have applied from 2004 on as a minor, that way he could have kept both. Now he is a major and needs to renounce his Canadian nationality. It´s unbelievable that Feyenoord didnt force him to apply for the Dutch nationality as soon as he became eligble(you can actually start 6 months earlier, like Maxwell wanted to do before he moved to Inter) Did DeGuzman play an official game for Canada? If he has, he has about 9 months to pick Holland and become eligble
No, he has never played international football, period. He turned down an invitation to play for the Canadian u-20s at home this past summer and has not responded to the Dutch Olympic invite (that we know of). As I said in the OP, those of us that have managed to ask the question have been getting the same answer for years--he's picking Holland. But, not for the reasons most would expect. It isn't impossible that he could play in a World Cup with Canada (arguably, Canada should be a favourite to grab a CONCACAF spot for '10), but it is impossible for him to play internationally with his brother if he goes Dutch). The de Guzman's are holding onto a grudge with the CSA that dates back more than a decade. FWIW, It has to do with a suspension Jonathon received when he was 10. Regardless, he needs to make the call. Hopefully, the television network isn't overstating what he said because I, for one, am sick of the will he or won't he talk that has been going on for years.
Apparently the tv website that had stated he would make his decision this weekend has changed the programming info for the show and now it just says he will answer the questions from the show's host.
You can´t be invited if you are not a citizen of that country. Right now the only invitation he can turn down is the canadian one
The way it's been brought tonight on the Feyenoord site and most big football sites over here it looks like he's finally going to make a choice.
There is nothing about his choice, just that he can play for Holand now. I wonder if he has to renounce his Canadian one, maybe it will be a topic next saturday
Does him getting a Dutch passport mean that the Canadian government will force him to give up his Canadian passport? In Holland you can apply for a Dutch passport after you've lived in the country for five years. As far as I can tell there's no obstacles in De Guzman getting a Dutch passport, and he'd indeed be silly not to get one as it would greatly benefit his career in European club football. This doesn't necessarily mean that he'll end up playing for Holland though. Dual nationality still leaves him with a choice. Also, to play for Holland, he has to get called up for Holland and play in an official international game - can't see that happening as De Guzman didn't play well last season and has been very inconsistent this season. He needs to deliver on his promise soon as he won't be labelled a great talent forever. Also considering who he's called up for the upcoming Holland friendly, Van Basten is not going to change his squad anyway. So this De Guzman thing isn't an issue until September 2008 when the Dutch FA appoint a new manager.
That depends on what they've agreed on with the Canadian government. Dutch Moroccans for example are not allowed to give up their Moroccan nationality because Moroccan law forbids it.
OK so the next question would then be: would not having a Canadian passport still make him eligible for the Canadian national football team. If the answer to that is no, then I'm afraid he'll choose the Dutch nationality. Footballers generally choose what's best for their career in club football.
he's gonna pick holland and announce it on canadian tv because he feels he owes an explanation to us canadians. at least he's giving one and probably at better one than the one hargreaves gives all the time (i'm british, my grandmother still lives in england.) blah blah blah. i would respect him if he just said that the soccer program in england is much better and at a higher level than canada and therefore would like to push himself further. i expect de guzman to say he feels he is still canadian, but feels that this is a career move. who can blame him? it's his career. so many move down to the south for a better occupation. they also become american to get better benefits. i see this no differently. de guzman will always be canadian to me if he feels he's canadian even though he plays for another country. i would have so much more respect for hargreaves if he just told the truth and said that england has a better program instead of trying to justify himself being english when clearly he's not. anyway, hargreaves is talented and for that alone i'm proud even though he could be such a better person.
That would be a pretty big slap if he summons Canadian TV to say he is going Dutch. Doesn't he want to play on the same team as his brother?
