Been hearing about this guy for 10 years, just got around to buying a CD -The Silent Life- of his today. Part of me says he's a true killer on bass(he got skills, no doubt), and another part says he needs a bassist.

    Any thoughts?

I saw Jonas Hellborg perform several years ago with a band called Hellborg, Lane & Sipe. It was all pure improv. They played three jams in an hour. It was one of the coolest things I ever saw. That being said, I haven't cared for much of his recorded output.

Is the Lane in Hellborg, Lane & Sipe by chance Shawn Lane?

I believe that was his name. He was the group member I was least familiar with. The Sipe, by the way is Jeff Sipe, formerly of Aquarium Rescue Unit and currently (at least the last that I heard) of Leftover Salmon.

Yeah, it's Shawn Lane. They released an album with that trio called "Temporal Analogues of Paradise," which isn't as good as the one with Michael Shrieve on drums and Buckethead on acoustic guitar. That one is called "Octave of the Holy Innocents," and kicks major butt.

Are they still around? I saw them about five times with Col. Bruce Hampton. They had Jimmy Herring on guitar, Matt Mundy on mandolin, Oteil Burbridge (perhaps the world's most underrated bassist) and Apartment something on keyboards. Awesome band, playing in a dive club in Huntsville.

Nah, they're done. At some point, Hampton left, and now Herring is playing with The Dead (by way of Jazz Is Dead) and Burbridge with The Allman Brothers, I think. Oteil is also touring with a band called Vida Blue with Page McConnell from Phish and Russell Batiste, drummer from The Meters, IIRC.
