I could not find a thread on him, if there is one already started go ahead and merge this one into it.

Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer player Johnny David (Hillside, NJ) has signed a contract to play with G.D. Chaves, a club in the second division of professional soccer in Portugal. A native of Portugal, David will begin his professional career when he reports in July for pre-season training, following his final semester at Fairleigh Dickinson.

On the roster he is listed from NY:
6 Johnny David 5-9/165 MF SR Hillside, NJ/Hillside

I am not sure if he counts as a YA or not.

He was picked by the Metrostars in the 5th round of this years draft.

I remember somebody on the college boards posting about this guy quite a bit around SuperDraft time. I'll have to look him up -- can't tell (after a brief search) whether he's a Yank but thanks for the tip.

Johnny was definitely born in Portugal. I do not know whether he got citizenship at some point.

Portugal? Why would he want to play there? When was the last time a team from Portugal ever did anything? :D ;)

OK, back on subject, did David go to camp and get cut by the Metros or did he opt to go straight to Europe and bypass the Metros?

David wasn't at the La Manga Cup with the Metros, don't know if he ever trained with them back here

I believe he was one of the first players to be cut from the MetroStar's roster.

I think Chaves has a very strong following in the Northeast US, and they travel to the area nearly every summer.
