John Thorrington is out at Grimsby according to the Official Site He made 2 appearances and "Failed to Impress" He's looking for a new club.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town Could MLS be calling soon? Who has any room for him? Columbus needs help and so do the Revs, albeit defensive help.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town Times is right for a move. I still would like to see him head to the Dutch 2nd division and give that a try.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town Based on his recent history, there is no garuntee he could make an MLS roster.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town Hell send John over to revland and he can study kamler and ralston for a while,,,we can jettison JMM and his overpaid but out the door to make room
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town That is an interesting idea. Not one that would happen but I assume that there would be about 4 or 5 A-League teams that would give him more than the MLS leagus minimum. I am not sure how much more he could command from MLS. When Frankie came back, he commanded much more due to his World Cup experience. Jovan Kivroski had extensive NT experience. Thorrington's case seems to be more like Twillman's. Tried oversees for a while and decided to return to the US to try his luck in MLS. If nothing else, those that follow his career could really know how he plays. Most have only one match to rate him, that second half sub role vs Ecuador at CCS.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town Which was three years ago. I still think he's got talent, and wouldn't mind the Metros signing him (I'm presuming they still have some cap space) and giving him a chance to beat out Vaca or win a backup midfield role. But it's absolutely true that he's going to be a lot closer to the minimum than the maximum at this point.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town That was my thinking too, though being a right mid probably helps. Nevertheless I think his name might still carry a little weight over here so I'd guess he would get some nibbles.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town I think any coach would be premature to dismiss taking a look at a player with a national team cap, no matter how insignificant that cap was.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town If I were the fat guy I'd trade Kiro straight up for Thorrington. I haven't seen him play all that much, but he is a roll playing winger-type who can whip a cross or two in and has (or had anyway, he's had some injuries) good speed. Just the thing Ruiz and the Gals need. It's just a hunch, but I have a feeling JT's going to need next year to get his act together and then he'll be all right - maybe even in the MLS.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town First, JT has money issues that will come up. MLS teams arent going to want to pay much to sign a guy at this point, unless hes an impact player. And lets be honest, JT hasnt played much lately, and has had a hard time finding time for teams that frankly arent that great. Probably below MLS quality here. That to me indicates he wont be a stand out player in MLS. Which also indicates to me that MLS teams wont want to pay him. I think we are talking another Ian Joy here, he wont garner as much interest as people think, and he would probably be looking to catch on in europe instead. I could be wrong, I certainly have been before. And I know JT has garnered some great reviews by bigsoccer posters. I just dont see it happening.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town I wonder what happened to the old John Thorrington. He's apparently been completely recovered from his injury for a long time, but pre-injury he was tearing up Division 2 and literally dribbling rings around everyone, and post-injury he hasn't played well even in Division 3. Mainly a confidence issue?
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town In a sense ,I wonder if he ever recovered from the injury he suffered back when EPL teams were seriously looking at him. Interesting if he catches on MLS.We'll be sure to hear"See,MLS is only as good as the Conference"
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town I think he lost some of his motivation when he wasn't called upon for the last WC. From everything I've read, he really lost his form since then and hasn't regained it.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town Kirovski for Thorrington? Someone who's playing well for you for someone you admittedly haven's seen play all that much? I seem to recall Ruiz getting a lot of service from Kirovski so far this year...
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town Really? I'm not saying you're wrong or anything. It's just really weird that he apparently expected to be called up from the English 2nd division, to the World Cup.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town I personally don't buy this lost motivation stuff. The way I remember it (which could be wrong) is that he has struggled with a series of injuries and just has hadn't had a chance to put together a string of games to get his form back. Then didn't he also have some issues with his contract that kept him out of games?
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town At the risk of a tangent your memory is much better than mine. Seriously, I think Herzog and Kiro are too much of the same thing and a true winger, like JT would help a team like LA - and the USMNT for that matter - not that JT should be in the line-up, but that putting another US eligible RM in Arena's day to day scope might help flesh out that side of the field a bit. But I don't think JT is going to dramatically alter anyone's world one way or the other.
Re: John Thorrington/ Grimsby Town for what is worth ( not sure if anyone mentioned it) Grimsby are relegated
