John Barnes is the best winger in history of Liverpool club. He won FWA Footballer of the year for twice times and three times PFA eam of the year. He was a great scorer with 16.2 goal per season in all comeptition between 1982 - 1991. Marc Overmars was one of the best wingers in the Europe during the 2nd half 1990s. He also won the 1994 FIFA World Cup Best Young Player. He is one of the fastest player in football history. He was also a successful player in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 European Championship. However, he never won PFA Team of the year during three seasons at Arsenal and his years in Barcelona was considered in below international-class at least twice seasons.
It is considered by me not reference . He played just 60 percent of La Liga games in twice seasons and scored just once goal.
It;s not so obvious ... as they both were very very good ... I think I prefer Overmars style with his lightning dribble run down the flank ...
Close one, I like Overmars superior technique but Barnes had a strong WC86, including a great 20 minutes against Argentina. I'll take Barnes for this one.
Sorry, boys. The length and impact of Barnes's career doesn't make this close. Overmars was good, and I loved him, but John was a better player.
Not just the length, but his peak as well. I don't think Overmars had a season as good as Barnes' 87/88 or 89/90. What goes against Barnes is his general failure to repeat his club form at international level. He had his moments, but not as many as a player of his quality should have had.
Overmars won the player of the league award in his first full season for Ajax. In the year afterward he ended second behind Ed de Goey and was best youngster at the world cup. His injury in the 95/96 season was a major reason why Ajax could not defend their Champions League title. Barnes was not an inherently better player.
