It looks like he actually did make it to Mallorca and is heading back for his second season this fall:

But he went through a handful of tryouts with pro teams overseas, first in Romania and then in Spain, before landing with a team. He trained with Real Club Deportivo Mallorca, a Segundo Division team in Palma, Spain, in the Balearic Islands, for two weeks and the pro club signed him to a two-year contract in September 2014.

Anybody know what position(s) Joe plays? Always nice to see a young yank plying his trade is Spain. Such quality technical development in that part of the world.

DROGHEDA UNITED boss Pete Mahon is pulling out all the stops to land American ace Joe Efford.

The striker, 20, has been training with the Drogs for the last three weeks but has now returned to his native Atlanta to apply for a work permit.

He wasn't a part of their last match. They play again Friday.

 

I believe their season has started, and he isn't listed on the online roster -- also didn't appear in the 11 or on the bench for their first match.

 

Still no news I can find, though I'll note that apparently he scored two goals in a preseason friendly for Drogheda -- so the man does exist, and has played a soccer game in 2017.
