Joao Plata to return to Liga de Quito Walking The Red Wow, why they let him go .He's a very good and speedy player. That dreaded transfer fee.
No kidding. He was the Toronto player I most worried about. Guess they need to sign some more tired Euro's.
The club "TFC' feel the transfer fee is too high for the speedster, but they rather have an expensive aging Euro-pea -on.
There's your change of direction. The current management feels that the transfer fee is too high but it may not have been for Winter. And it could also be that all along they knew that they would need Julian DeGuzman's DP slot to make the transfer work, and now Mariner wants to keep him (him being DeGuzman).
I was going to say, I thought that they had already finalized the purchase when Winter was coach but I assumed that perhaps it wasn't when this came up.
Part of this is MLS's fault--no way should a player showcased in the combine come with so many strings attached. The combine should essentially be a meat market where the only negative for picking a player might be that he fills an int'l slot. They should all be free agents. RSL picked Bonfigli (an Argentine) this year and he came from a side in Ecuador and I don't think there's any transfer fee talk there. It's a shame to see Joao Plata leaving the league--although who knows, if the right team steps up, TFC may trade "rights" and he could still wind up somewhere, he's so young.
JDG has had a very solid season, even when we were on that nightmare skid. He's certainly not worth his salary, and we could use the DP slot elsewhere on the pitch, but that doesn't mean that he's crap. Now, he was crap more than good the past couple of years. The irony is, that Mariner seems to not want to use him as much this one year he's doing okay.
Let's hope some other team picks him and pay the fee. RB can sure use a speedy winger like him instead still waiting for the bad boy Rogers
What is the transfer fee (besides "large")? Seems a relatively pointless discussion without this bit of info.
Plata skips practice, days with TFC could be numbered MLSsoccer Walking The Red has this... Plata Deal Nearing Completion ?..
MLS would be well-served to simplify the entry process and eliminate the youth internationals from the draft. That pool has struck me as extremely odd and awkward during its two years of heavy use (2011 and 2012; I know there were sporadic ones before). If a player attends a US college or high school and is unaffiliated with an MLS youth academy, he goes through the draft. If a player is foreign-based--- part of a Brazilian 2nd division team, a former Liverpool academy player, whatever--- he is signed like any other professional (free transfer via trial, loan, whatever). Not going to be perfect (still not sure what happens to CIS players, and there will always be Bingham/Gil/Saad types) but considerably more clear and smooth.
A bit of light at the end of the dark tunnel called TFC. Cochrane: Plata still remains with Toronto FC TSN
Plata has great future gets caps for Ecuador and is young. Why let him go? makes no sense.. But then again TFC makes little sense.
Plata is too short for MLS, so is De Guzman. In today's soccer, if you are under 5'8 you have no chance to win anything.
This article helped me understand a little bit more what was going on. In other words, he didn't want to be here anymore. http://www.torontosun.com/2012/07/03/plata-a-no-show-for-tfc
So you don't think this guy would do well in MLS. I guess that one inch that Landon Donovan and Guillermo Barros Schelotto have on him makes all the difference.
