Well he also has a history of being a horrible sports reporter so maybe, just maybe, he'll make himself look like even more of an ass and be wrong.
From the Wizards Weekly Press Release: Defender Jimmy Conrad Out Saturday Due to Fractured Jaw Kansas City Wizards defender and captain Jimmy Conrad suffered a fracture in his jaw Saturday in the Wizards 1-0 victory over Columbus. The injury, sustained in a collision with the Crew's Ricardo Virtuoso in the 8th minute, will keep Conrad out for at least one week. In lieu of surgery, Conrad has agreed to eat soft foods for a month. He will be re-evaluated May 16. "Every team has to deal with injury and adversity," Head Coach Curt Onalfo said, "but we are confident that both Aaron Hohlbein and Tyson Wahl can fill in for Jimmy for the time being." Conrad missed seven weeks due to a broken jaw last year after former Revolution midfielder Clint Dempsey struck Conrad in the face with an elbow. Dempsey was suspended for two games and fined $1,000 for the incident. Despite missing so much time, Conrad was a finalist for MLS Defender of the Year in 2006. He won the award in 2005 and was a finalist in 2004. Conrad has played in 104 matches for the Wizards over the last five seasons, scoring nine goals and recording three assists over that span. Conrad has become a stalwart on the U.S. National team as well, appearing in 22 career matches and scoring one goal. He has played in all three National Team matches thus far in 2007, starting each game and playing a vital role for a defense that has allowed only two goals. Conrad's only career goal came in a 2-0 victory over archrival Mexico when Conrad converted a header in the 52nd minute that proved to be the game winner. Conrad has worn the captain band twice for the United States. Midfielder Davy Arnaud will replace Conrad on Wednesday on The Jimmy Conrad Show, details below.
But, according to the Cowlumbus fans, it was a clean, aggressive play. Their players don't play dirty....Virtuoso was tracking the ball the entire time!!
If the MLS really wanted to stop serious injuries like Conrad's and Preki's all they would need to do is suspend the offending player until the injured player is able to return. Do you think Dempsey would have lead with an elbow if he thought he could miss 5-10 games? Do you think Stoichkov would have.. ooh, bad example - we'll skip that one
Good point... if the NHL did, Todd Bertuzzi still wouldn't be playing after that hit on Stephen Moore...
If I may weigh in here...in the interests of full disclosure here, I am the team photographer for the Crew. Just gonna tell you what I saw, and y'all can do with it what you like from there. I was in the corner...opposite from where the TV camera angle was. I was watching it through the viewfinder. It came into my view right as the ball cleared Hartman's back and I had a clean line of sight on it. I also framed through the field level camera angle that's on the league's website. I invite everyone who's interested to do the same thing. From what I saw, Virtuoso was tracking the ball until right before he jumped. He turned his head in order not to go face-on into Jimmy Conrad. It was clearly his shoulder, not an elbow, that hit Jimmy in the face. From the angle I saw it live, and bringing that into viewing the replay, I truly do not think it was intentional. Obviously it was poor judgement, but I don't see intent. I strongly disagree with the announcer's comments. Part of that may be colored by the player involved...Virtuoso's not a goon. There are certainly guys in the league that I believe might well carry an intent to injure, but he's not one of them. Having said that, I had the pleasure of working around JC when he was an All Star here to play Fulham. He's a class act, and I truly hope this heals quickly. It's not like he's gonna get a lot of sleep being a new father... Take it for what it's worth... By the way...Cashew's is a cool place. Great jukebox...
Just a little love tap. If Jimmy wasn't so soft he'd just shake it off and rub some dirt on it. Now it's Jimmy's fault, maybe the doctor's fault. Anybody but Virtuoso.
poor baby. there should have been alot more calls than there was. ecspecially when gonzalez fell down after standing up because of his 'neck injury'. the ref told him to stand up like 4 times and then was like o well, bring out the trainer. it reminded me that game that we had young Ben Jones in center ref. worst game of my life. but Terry Vaughn comes pretty close as well.
whoever posted about the amount of time...i assume it was deleted by a mod or pulled off another thread...i was going off a report from a tv show since the link wasn't up on any websites that i could find
Has his wife had the baby yet? Maybe this is all a diabolical plot to get him some paternity leave... Anyway, I'm sorry to hear the news. You guys have been solid, and I tend to root for you more often than not (partially because of Jimmy, I knew him when he was a kid and my brother still keeps in touch with him, gotta root for my homeboy...).
Frank Boal at Fox 4 news reported the broken jaw but only noted that Jimmy stayed in the entire game. It showed, according to Frank, that it goes go show soccer players are really tough after all. Of course, what he should have reported on is how long Conrad will be out and what it means to the team. But then, that would require him (a) to be a reporter and (b) to care more than a wit about soccer. (Also, nothing about this on the team web site.)
