Was he worth our first pick of the draft? I dunno.

    The Conrad File

I suppose I can see CJ's point in doing this... we need defensive help and we need it badly. Conrad made 25 appearances for SJ last year, all 25 as a starter. His stats were something like this:17

    DEF Jimmy Conrad

25 Games Played, 25 Games started, 2248 minutes. 1 Goal, 3 Assists for 5 points. 13 shots, 6 on goal. 38 Fouls comitted, 18 fouls suffered; 9 Cautions, no ejections.

Basically we've drafted a defender with experience and someone who was a first choice defender for the defending MLS Cup champs. The guy is 6'2" and apparantly has some aerial chops-- something that our defense is in desperate need of. I have to think that it's going to turn out to be a good move. Oh, he's also 25... this in combination with no PV brings our defensive average age down by 10 years :)

Jimmy "yellow card" Conrad is your problem now. He missed three or more games with us due to yellow or red cards.Good luck.

last i checked yellows didn't matter, as someone else takes his spot. as for reds, as long as they're against SJ i'm fine with it.

Word on the juniors boards is that Ricky Lewis injured either his acl or groin, which would explain trading for Conrad over drafting Lewis.

Which position does he start in?

Today at the draft we asked the players about Conrad and the formation of our team this year. They all had nothing but good things to say about Jimmy (to be expected, not like they are going to rip a new teammate). But Tony seemed honestly excited about it. I asked about the formation, but the players dont get that decision. I'd say they are leaning to a 3-5-2

    Tony
    Garcia-Talley-Conrad
    Z-Diego
    Klien-Preki-Quill/Armstrong
    Wolff-Fabrro/Igor

Personally I'm pumped for Jimmy to be here.

Jimmy is worth it. He is a great player and really works well on the field. I'm just so upset to see him leave San Jose, any chance we can have him back? no? okay..

No doubt, as you were the only one to go "Woooooo!" after the announcement. :)

Like I mentioned to BenC at the draft. I wasn't initially thrilled with the trade. Probably because you get lulled into the romance of a young guy who might be the next Donovan, etc. After a minute or two it becomes clear that at least this is an attempt to solve two problems. 1)Size on set piece defense - At 26 6'2" 185lb. this move allows big Talley to mark the #2 threat, Conrad to handle the "big gun" for years to come, and Garcia on the speed guy or other threat. and 2)no proven third starter at the back - This allows Burciaga and Brunt to progress as they can in practice and sub spots instead of getting abused in league games. We've seen Conrad. He has known qualities like size, positional intelligence, being able to handle aerial defense, and earning yellows. Conrad is more than serviceable and might even be that "spark" needed with McKeon's departure. Who knows, Ben might have been initially right. Either way it was a necessary move. Obviously the move is a step up from trading the engine of a title team for an aging buddy with declining numbers...

The bottom line will become apparent in time. Arturo Alvarez (SJ's selection with our pick) is 18 and a proven scorer at the youth international levels. Like several others, I'm sure he'd be happy to poach his first against KC.

I was initially happy because I went to the draft knowing we needed defense. Even before Wolff was signed we were heavy in attacking players. With Wolff coming over, we were even more lopsided. As soon as I heard Conrad I knew our 11 was nearly set in stone. I've watched him play some great games and believe he'll do the same for us in KC.

By all accounts the players were happy with this trade as well. Someone (to remain nameless unless they choose to name themselves) mentioned that during the draft Tony was ripping the front office of the Wizards. One could only assume he was upset that they had chased a forward and waited to help him in the defence. Tony seemed very pleased, as did the other players, with Conrad coming over. And they mentioned numerous times that KC had the best first two picks, because we got two proven starters that will be on the field on 4/12.

I liked it too. I too was hoping for a glamorous draft pick but am smart enough to know that this was a quality trade and should be good as long as he does not retire on us now.

Holy Crap we traded for a player and he didn't retire! Channel 9 news tonight talked about the trade and showed Mr. Conrad working out in practice today inside the Arrowhead Practice facility. He seemed excited to be here and excited about the team.

I thought Jimmy Conrad was still serving a 20 years to life sentence in the New York state Pen. for Racketeering and Murder?? ;) That's what it says on Goodfellas anyway...

I love seeing PV mentioned not as a coach, but as an old player.
