I've heard that there was some rant this idiot made about soccer that has pissed a few people off. What exactly did he say?

On which day of what week since 1994? He's always making some crack about soccer when his email slows up. He knows he can count on irate soccer fans to flood his box.

    Ignore him.

I don't know what he said about soccer - he turned me off pretty much the first time he opened his mouth. The guy's a complete and total git. Always has been, probably always will be.

He has been bashing soccer non-stop since '94..
When the WC ended in '98, for example, he closed his show stating how happy he was that the awful event was over so he wouldn't be forced to discuss it for another 4 years... He never has except to put it down.. He calls it a non-sport and the most boring sport on earth... And worse.

A lot of people feel about soccer the same way Jim Rome does. If they didn't the game would be a lot more popular in the US.

From what I've read about his statements, he holds a strong dislike (should I say hate?) of soccer. The general American public are just apathetic to the sport.

He doesn't hate soccer he says that stuff to get people riled up because he knows soccer fans are super sensetive.

It's talk radio's 80-20 Rule. 80% of what you hear represents 20% of the general public.

A few regulars at BS have come to the conclusion that Rome is actually a soccer fan. It's like when you were young, if you liked a girl you teased her so she'd pay attention to you. He knows way too much about the sport not to be a fan. Or at least that's what some people contend.

I happen to agree with sport boy, I think he just says those things to get so cal soccer fans riled up. The funny thing is that he has had Eric Wynalda and Steve Sampson on his show, and admitted then that he thought they we going in the right direction.

I just pray to God that his little kid decides he wants "Daddy" to sign him up for the local rec league one of these days.

He loves pissing off the soccer fans. He enjoys the heck out of it. He enjoys that they think in their minds that he really does hate the sport.

I could see some strength behind that argument, but in the end I don't really buy it. But it des seem like he goes out of his way to mention specific information. He'll mix two specific names such as Marcelo Wynalda or Landon Mathis.

I don't buy it either. He probably just has a really good intern doing research.

Rome doesn't bug me most of the time. I don't listen to him and I'm amused every time a thread pops up in BS because he said unkind words about soccer.
But it's funny how his in-your-face attitude does a 180 turn when he's interviewing someone. Romey is the sports radio equivalent of James Lipton.

He's a sports reporter on FOX Sportsnet who has his own talkshow. Tries to play off the notion that he's a "hardliner" who "asks the questions that nobody else has the balls to ask". Not really that great, though I suppose thats why he's on Fox sportsnet and not espn.

Actually, "The Last Word" has been cancelled. Rome just signed up to host a new weekly show on ESPN. If you are that curious about some of the crap he's said about soccer, you can go to www.jimrome.com and search the word soccer for articles in which it appears. Some are kinda funny, IMHO.

Fox Sports Radio is so much better than ESPN.

Yes, I know who Jim Rome is. It is traditional in these Jim Rome threads for someone to chime in with the question "Who's Jim Rome?" (as in, who cares?) - as soon as possible (post 12 was a long time)

    newbie

    PS - Thanks Skip

A nobody. He was bold enough to have this presentation of himself on his website though:

"Perhaps the most respected voice in the world of sports broadcasting, Jim Rome is the leading opinion-maker of his generation."

Most of his fans don't like the idea that soccer gets ripped into by Rome.

When he had his tour stop in Madison, I remember that the fans ripped into him when he went into an anti-soccer rant. They played that incident on the radio show the following monday.

Now I know why he has the facial hair now. He's trying to hide from Jim "Don't Call Me Chris" Everett.

It's been a month since somebody posted, but.....

I went to his stop in K.C. last summer. I got in for free from an AutoZone promo (I think the whole crowd did actually).

It took an hour for the show to start, all the while girls were flashing left and right. It was like a Kiss concert, except you could see. Wonderful.

The show started and I left. I don't care what he says about soccer, he just annoys me anyway.
