I don't know if anyone gives a damn but I myself was sickened upon learning the Anitchrist himself Jim Rome has found a new home on one of the Manson family of stations ESPN. Just when I thought the days were getting brighter this thug shows back up on TV. Maybe ESPN will be a better fit for him though. His show will fit right in with other groundbreaking productions on ESPN such as the Outdoor Games, National Cheerleading Championships from Disneyworld, the Strongest Man in the World Competition, and Miss Fitness USA. Way to go ESPN, really pushing the envelope. ESPN sucks.

Enjoy your new home Rome, you'll fit right in with all the other psycho rednecks.

i doubt it will be his new home for a while. i watched the show and it was god awful.

  3. I wonder why ESPN would go after a retread like Jim Rome? SUM should call up ESPN and tell them that if there is any over the top MLS bashing their gonna shop the rights to the world cup elsewhere. As for ESPN, they just keep going to the lowest common denominator. Have you seen 'Around the horn"? Its so bad its laughable.

I, for some stupid reason, watched a bit of the first show. And it did indeed suck. Rome gives the impression that he is constantly whining, only he tries to hide it by making his voice sound stern and tough. He never changes the emotion in his voice, monotone, monotone, monotone. I think I spelled that right.

For some reason, by the time I was done watching the show i didn't feel any more informed or educated about the subjects he was ranting about, even though thats obviously what he's going for, to shed the light.

What a tool and wast of airtime

Probably a better fit for either "TV, Books and Music" or "Other Sports," seeing how Rome has zilch to do with soccer, other than neat-o nicknames he makes up like "Clint Chastadonahamm".

Rome rocks, but he can never do TV, it just doesn't work out good. The radio show is all he should ever worry about.

I like how someone called him a whiner, did you look at the posts in this thread?

The point I'm trying to make here is; If you want to help keep Rome out of TV, then just DON'T watch the show at all!.

Rome rocks? No, Rome does not rock. Rome bashes soccer every chance he gets. Rome needs his ass kicked and he has no place on a sports channel that supposedly supports soccer.

Speaking of the Worldwide Leader in Sports, I see ESPN has the National Spelling Bee on today. No UEFA Champions League, but they will show kids spelling words. Brilliant.

Apart from permanently desecrating the memory of one of the better Clash songs of all time, Jim Rome's TV commercials feature him making the following earth-shattering pronouncements:

    1. Barry Bonds is good.
    2. Out of control Little League parents should relax.

I think there's one other that I'm forgetting, but I'm sure it's equally vapid, or else I would have remembered it. If you're trying to position the show as a home for hip and edgy commentary, shouldn't the commercials feature the host saying something that anyone with a complete set of chromosomes might conceivably disagree with?

What does this man say or do that makes him so popular? For that matter, what does he say or do that makes him so worthy of being enshrined in the BigSoccer Groupthink Hall of Shame?

Jim Rome is a tool, and I can't stand him. The key though, I don't watch his show. If you watch him, you are just helping him in ratings. He mainly rips on soccer to get attention. The more haters he attracts, the higher his ratings. We just got his radio show here in Chicago and he bought the time for it himself. I don't plan on listening to him...

What does Rome not rocking have to do with his soccer bashing? As amazing as it may seem to you, one can still rock while insulting soccer (and half the time, he's bashing soccer fans, not soccer - get it right).

And does he really bash soccer "every chance he gets"? How does he find time for his other rants? Does he not run out of soccer bashing material? Surely, he only bashes soccer occasionally and it only seems like "every chance he gets" to the most thin-skinned of soccer fans.

That said, I find Rome annoying for the most part. His "in your face" persona is contrived and while he pretends to be ballsy when talking to the viewer, he becomes a schoolgirl with a crush as soon as he starts talking to a professional athlete.

Rome does indeed suck, but it has nothing to do with his apparent dislike for soccer. He can bash soccer to his heart's content if he didn't suck so much.

the fact that his fans say things like "Rome rocks" tells me everything I need to know about him.

You guys need to lay off Rome. He's a meat-head sports show host and he has his place. He's for American football, basketball, and baseball fans - and for them, he's quite entertaining (his radio show). He interviews the best talent for those sports, and sometimes cracks a good low-brow joke.

He appeals to the grunts of our culture and could never appreciate a sport that is dominated by people non-American. And neither could his audience. He doesn't cater to soccer-types, and only says what his average sheet-metal worker would want to hear.

As for his impact on soccer - there is none. Do any of you actually believe someone will watch or not watch a soccer match based on a Jim Rome comment? Please. Jim Rome does not dictate who supports what sport - that's done way earlier in life.

I bet you, if Jim Rome went on a crusade for soccer, it wouldn't do a thing. You choose your sport to follow as a kid. Only rarely do people catch on with a new sport later in life, and when that happens, it is due to the sport, not some jock-sniffing (I like that one) commentator.

I wonder if ESPN wants him to die in a fire since they named the show "Rome is Burning"? Just curious? Couldn't that get them a Red Card on BS?

What you're describing is "Dennis Miller syndrome."

And I also think he should be stoned for using the Clash song.

He was funny as sheet about the US Mexico game last week. Paraphrasing:

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspLast night, 70,000 people showed up to watch soccer! Damn! Just when I thought we were making
&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp progress, that people had forgotten about the sport, 70,000 people go and show up for soccer match.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspWell, they got exactly what they deserved. A ZERO-ZERO tie. Apparently though, there were some
&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspreally good chances. I could hear them talking today around the water cooler...

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp "Man that game was great last night! Did you see when Alexi McDonovan ALMOST scored?!?!?"

    &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp and

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp "That was so exciting when Clint Meolastain just BARELY missed."

I just don't understand how this guy draws ANY ratings. In addition to being a huge soccer fan, I also enjoy basketball and sometimes football, and well -- ALL sports. This guy doesn't do anything to keep my interest in what he's saying, though. It's like the whole purpose of his program is to go out and prove that he's "cool", or something. And he contradicts himself so much, it's disturbing. "I'm right, because I'm me" seems to be his theme.

All of this in addition to him being clueless about soccer. I just don't get it. For me, Jim Rome is a prime example of the decline of intelligence and thought in American culture.

I wasn't as surprised that Rome has a new show (look at some of the other shite on tv) as I was that ESPN keeps advertising said show during soccer (MLS every Saturday and I think during the US-Mexico match). When the first ad came on I muttered "what the hell" to myself and had to explain to my wife that soccer fans hate this guys guts and advertising his show during a match probably wasn't going to attract any viewers.

I haven't tuned in. Not because of the soccer bashing, I just thought his radio show was awful. I figure if listening to a self-important jerk is bad, watching AND listening would be worse (unless the jerk is getting slapped, kicked, bitten or otherwise attacked in the groin, then the show becomes must-see tv).

I'm sure just about every romehatingsoccerfan who saw those commercials tuned in. Then they come on here and say how bad his show is.
