Some people here are simply idiotic and ignorant of Chinese politics. Jiang Zemin will continue to have an important influence in the course of Chinese governance for at least the next five years, much like Deng Xiaoping did after he officially stepped down and as Lee Kuan Yew did in Singapore after stepping down.

Jiang has actually been a moderating factor within the military establishment over the last few years. When the hard liners in the government (and in the Chinese populace) wanted to take stronger actions when the United States bombed the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia in 1999, he towed them along a line of reconciliation. Same with the unfortunate collision over the South China Sea between areas of Chinese sovereignty (Hainan Province and the Paracel Islands - part of Guangdong Province). Government people in Taibei are also happy to see Jiang maintain an important role in Beijing because Jiang has long worked against military confrontation with the Taiwan Authorities.

Hu Jintao is an unknown to many Westerners. What is welcome is that an unexpectedly large number of the politburo and the standing committee are technocrats and provincial administrators. Along with the phasing out of the old guard is the pushing out of the old ideologues (surely to the joy of Jiang.) Also not mentioned much is the departure of Li Peng (something which brings me much joy - I hate the pig - as well as surely to many Chinese people. When I was in China, of the big three, people I talked to had a strong like of Zhu Rongji and only slightly less of Jiang Zemin, but a rather strong hatred of Li Peng.
