Jews Wary Of Striking Against Iran Nukes

American Jews continue to be in the forefront of opposition to the Bush administration’s Iraq policies, and that distrust may be spilling over to limit support for strong U.S. action to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons — despite the recent barrage of anti-Semitism and threats to Israel from the government in Tehran.

Those were among the findings in the annual American Jewish Committee Survey of Jewish Opinion released this week. The 2005 poll depicted a Jewish community more closely identified with Israel, more religiously affiliated and just as Democratic as ever, despite continuing predictions of a partisan shift.

At the same time, slightly less than half the Jews polled, 49 percent, said they would support U.S. military action against Iran to stop its nuclear weapons program, with 46 percent opposing.

Nationally, 56 percent of Americans support military action against Iran, with 38 percent opposing. “I would have predicted that 60 percent [of Jews] would have supported military action,” Harris said.

The 49 percent figure “may be in part a reflection of what we saw in the question on Iraq: a lack of confidence in this administration,” he said.

I remember explaining to certain posters that the Orthodox are now mostly Zionists:

More Jews said they felt “very close” to Israel — 36 percent, up from 31 percent in 2004 — and a rising number said that caring about Israel is “a very important part of my being a Jew.”

There, too, the denomination differences were significant: 73 percent of the Orthodox and 27 percent of the Reform said they felt very close to the Jewish state.

Overall, 36% of Jews feel "very close" to Israel, 41% feel "close" and 5% feel "distant."

The issue was never about American orthodox Jews. I cited Isreali studies about attitudes among ultra orthodox Israeli Jews regarding Zionism -- as well as the percentage of Israelis which fall in that category.
