How many are there? Who are they and who do they play for? I wonder if the Metros got an Israeli player it would be a draw for the Jewish/Israeli community (Haim Revivo anyone?). Isn't Agoos Jewish?
I'm not sure why this would matter, but if you must know: Jeff Agoos is the only current Jewish player I know of. And as a Jew and a soccer fan, I don't believe even for a second that any additional Jewish players would make a bit of difference to attendance. Unless I see documentation to the contrary, I'm assuming that Freddy Adu is Jewish (just like that other savior). ;-)
Jeff Agoos is jewish. He played in the Maccabi games for the US. And I'm pretty sure that Josh Wolff is also Jewish.
I thought he might be-Wolff is a Jewish name. I think the Burn have a reserve player who is Jewish. They were talking about him in the team board debating his age. I forget his name, but it sounded really Jewish. For the record, I am Jewish, so don't tell me I started this thread to promote anti-semitism or any nonsense like that.
Yeah you caught me. Too much Manischewitz. Damn that stuff is too sweet; it tastes just like alcoholic grape juice.
i think this came up about a year ago; it seems to be a recurring theme for some reason... ...but anyway, i THINK the final answer was josh wolff is NOT jewish as his father is jewish but not his mom, and jewish ethnicity (or whatever the word i'm looking for is) passes through the mother, not the father.
I think he's talking about Andy Rosenband, actually, who may or may not end up on the roster. Additionally, are you sure Hamisi Amani-Dove was actually Jewish?
I was under the impression he was. I thought I had read something confirming that, but it was when he first came into the league so I could be wrong.
It's not an odd question if you're Jewish. The appeal to Jews of the idea of Jews in sports has a strong history, and is interesting because of issues of diaspora and assimilation and ethnic stereotyping. "Guess who's the Jew" as a respectable function in this case. He's in the booth, not on the field, but make sure to put Shep Messing on any list.
So are we still looking for the Hank Greenberg of American soccer, or have we advanced to the Sandy Koufax phase?
Barca_Fan, here's a suggestion: Next time, guzzle the Manischewitz blackberry wine. It doesn't taste like cough syrup. Believe me, that concord grape concoction is not something I look forward to on a Friday night.
This is true FlashMan, unless one is Reform, which is that case means he could be. After all, Reform gives you a choice on just about everything.
This is not directly on the topic, but Alan Rothenberg is Jewish (as is U.S. women's team player Sara Whalen). To my knowledge, though, Agoos has been it.
Going through the pres-season media guide I have extracted the following players who maybe Jewish cause their names sound Jewish: 1. Josh Saunders That's about it. I was going to throw in Guy Abrahamson or Jack Jewsbury as a laugh, but no. Oh, well.
Sara Whalen is Jewish? Damn, I'm going to have to start taking this WUSA crap more seriously. She is my basherte!
Soccer will have arrived in the US the day Adam Sandler revises "The Hanukkah Song" to include the name of at least one soccer player.
How about "Drink a gin and tonic-a with Anthony Latronica" Or if you're feeling mean spirited, you could do something nastier, alleging that he "couldn't score with Monica" For those of you who don't know, Latronica was a GK for the A-League Boston Bulldogs and was called up to the KC Wizards for a game or two, and had trained with the Revs a few years ago. And no, I don't think he's Jewish. And for what it's worth, Dan Calichman is also Jewish, although he no longer plays. He coaches at a small college in Southern California now. Tom
