I agree completely. I also wonder if Herc would hold the same opinion off-camera or if the comments are just to try to drum up talking points / interest.

    So Cal
I think that Marsch's quote (as written...without context?) was just vague enough that it could be taken a couple of different ways but leans in one way will likely be taken in the worst way possible. Imo, Alejandro Moreno's take was a good one. It was a poor decision on Marsch's part for a few reasons: What goes around, comes around...both with future employers (USSF), and future players. It is a distraction. Jesse Marsch's focus should be on his current job with Canada.

Other than that, he can say what he wants.

Aren't we lucky that our wise federation managed to hold on Gregg instead of that obnoxious Jesse Marsch?

Typical ESPN. Drama queen Herc at it again. Just like they do on the basketball and football side, always drumming up rage and drama when it doesn't exist. Being contrarian just for the sake of it. I listened to Marsch's words, him saying it: NOTHING WRONG.

Marsch isn't wrong, but it's also not a good look to keep sticking his nose in the affairs of the USMNT. He needs to move on. The media are not blameless, always trying to get Marsch going for the headlines.

He could have done worse. He could have said we only got players in top teams because they need American investor money.

Anyone who has a problem with Jesse Marsch dragging the USMNT and their office right now is just a sour grapes loser. He has asserted that he has every right to take digs at them. Hes proven himself to be 1000 percent right thus far. We deserve to be dragged, and dragged hard. If Jesse is the mouthpiece, so be it. Hes earned that, and so have we.

His talk is incredibly cheap. So I guess we'll see what he has to say when Canada has to actually win a game that matters. We'll see what he says then, if his tune changes at all.

That said congrats to the Canadian organization on a momentous friendly win.

"Let's see if all that trash talking starts when its 0-0 instead of a 5, 6-point lead. That's when it starts. That's a sign of a good man if he can talk shit when it's even score, or talk shit when you behind score. When you're ahead, it's easy to talk."

Pretty sure Marsch has been talking for a while....

The USMNT will have an interim coach for the window in Micky Varas as they await the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, but regardless, Marsch expects his team to win in this clash.

"We're gonna win," Marsch said on the latest episode of Call It What You Want, a CBS Sports Golazo Network podcast he previously co-hosted. "I'll say 2-1."

My post is not Jesse related, but is more about comments recent coaches have made.
I’m curious: when did people become such snowflakes regarding free speech? On today’s Wynalda Talks Football, both Waldo and Jason Davies?/Davis? criticized Mikey Varas for his comments about the USMNT players, but ALSO criticized Caleb Porter and Wilfred Nancy for their comments from this past MLS weekend. Waldo & Jason came at it from the viewpoint of “stop whining”, “it’s not helpful”, “it’s a bad look”. Just for myself, I interpreted W&J’s pushback as “how DARE anyone criticize the USMNT players / MLS”!!! It had a whiff of them feeling protective of anyone who plays for the crest and protective of MLS.
And this reminds me: Tony Meola recently hushed/shut down comments Brian Dunivent [??? I think it was Dunny] made about Zlatan going into the Milan locker room after yet another underwhelming performance from Milan. At first Dunny said he wasn’t done (talking about Zlatan’s behavior) but Tony shut it down pronto! Why? Was Sirius XM afraid Zlatan wouldn’t ever be a guest if they dare said something unflattering about him?!
I could understand shutting down hate speech/racist talk/incite to violence but none of what anyone said was in that vein.

Seriously? Wynalda is FAR from a MLS apologist/cheerleader. Same with Jason Davis. Also, Caleb Porter is a whiner. Anyone who has watched MLS for the past decade knows this.

As for Meola shutting his colleague down, outside of the United States the media are NOT allowed in Locker Rooms. What is said in the locker room stays in the locker room. It's a respect thing. It's about not breaking the trust of the players, coaches, etc. who are potential guests on their show. What makes a show good is how comfortable the guests are talking with the hosts. If a guest doesn't trust the hosts, they aren't going to open up and tell good stories.

Uh oh, Hobo is taking notes. Got a little offended from the trash talk.

Some of you are hilarious. Cry that we're not a real futbol nation. Then come across a little trash talk and competition and you get all sensitive.

This has nothing to do with "competition"... there is no competition, Canada are pretty much a nascent soccer nation and we're talking about a friendly. No, this is about him being a douchebag and it being easy to point out what a douchebag he's being. That's it.

It would be so easy for him to look really, really good. Here's all it would take; say stuff like "I'm focused on getting my team ready for the cup in 2 years, they are doing a good job of expressing my philosophy, we have a big job and we are up for it, Canada has great fans and the team has pride and blah blah blah". Talk about what went right with their performances, talk about how great the Copa was in terms of the macro view. Just that, that's it. He'd look like such a winner! But instead, he can't help himself because frankly he's a shithead. And this is such wounded, microdick energy from him that if I were a Canada supporter I'd be embarrassed.

But all that said, please don't misinterpret me criticizing a petty narcissist douche as being significantly bothered... again, all he's doing is showing his ass as far as I'm concerned, and since everyone here feels the need to keep posting about it I may comment here or there. Because it's entertaining (and true) to talk about how pathetic his media persona is.

And whatever bullshit you said about people crying about not being a "real soccer nation" or whatever is just that... total bullshit.

I would like to see the Venn diagram of people who supported Berhalter and those who are so super upset that Marsch is calling out USSF (or just feel the need to say over and over that they think Marsch is a jerk meanie).

None of that has anything to do with free speech. And as others have noted, Wynalda is really not a fan of MLS, and Davies has never really been a defender.

I think it's much more of the more sort of "stop whining and stop blaming your failure on someone else." Wynalda does tend to defend the players, as he was one ... but I don't think any of this is them being snowflakes or wanting to limit speech. It's just Wynalda not liking players being called out in public.

Frankly, I think someone needed to do it, but I doubt Varas' comments have any real impact given that he's Mikey Varas.

And while I love Nancy, he somewhat put himself in the roster situation he was in, and yes, the rules kind of stink, but take it up with the MLSPA and plan for it.

Caleb Porter is known for his consummate whining -- it's a long running joke amongst Portland and Columbus fans - where he won titles! -- that his most said phrase is "the better team didn't win today" and this is at least the second time this season he's complained that the refs are out to get him.

    It's never Porter's fault. Ever.

I’ll have to take your (and others here) word for it that Waldo & Jason are not MLS simps, as I don’t have much knowledge of their past comments on MLS.
As to Tony Meola, Dunny was NOT giving out specifics about what Zlatan said inside the locker room (it brings up the question how would Dunny even know verbatim what Zlatan said!), but before Tony shut him down, Dunny was merely remarking on the fact of Zlatan going into the locker room. It was Dunny giving his opinion about Zlatan doing that.

Let’s leave aside GB, whom I think shouldn’t have been rehired.

Going back to spring 2023, I also was incredibly wary of Marsch because his career so far had been a guy way, way too married to one style of play. Canada could take the chance that he’s grown as a manager and become more flexible in part because they’re Canada and not the US, and in part because Red Bull soccer fits Canada better than us (IMO.). Plus having been out of work for a year, maybe Marsch himself has different ideas.

In the long run, yeah the Copa America was awful, but I feel better about 2026 with Pochettino anyway.

My concern now about Marsch’s remarks, as a US fan, is that a more flexible Marsch might be great for us one day, but he’s burning bridges.

Who is “anyone” here? Because to me, a fan has every right to criticize Marsch without being a “sour grapes loser.” I mean, we’re just randos on the internet. How can we have sour grapes over all this?

I bring this up because I don’t like the aspect of message board culture where people are trying to win an argument. I like BS best when people are sharing thoughts and info and opinions in a constructive way. (Yes, I need improvement too lol).

perfectly fair, I should have dialed it back a bit. Spur of passion after an absolutely crap performance.

We are at the perfect point now point for Poch to take over. At a very low point and we need a big manager to fix it. Well beyond any of our pay grades

that said, no matter how many bridges he has burned so far, I firmly believe day one after the 2026 cup Jesse is on the white courtesy phone unless Poch makes a semifinal run , and even then it’s no guarantee he stays on

One thing I like about Pochettino is that he’s a club coach at heart. I doubt he would WANT to stay on. If we suck in 2026 he won’t be rehired because we sucked. If we’re good he won’t be rehired because Aston Villa or Roma will back a Brinks truck up to his house.

I hope that by that time we will have different people making hiring decisions, otherwise he won't apply anyway. I do prefer Pochettino as well, just see a lot of sour grapes in this thread, and not just in this one.
