I was watching when Jeff Agoos went down, believing that he had been hit by something in the calf - perhaps something thrown by a spectator. I remember someone posting on these boards about a specific injury that felt exactly like that. As we all know, Agoos ended up injured and out of action for many weeks. The same thing happened to me just this evening. No contact. I was manuevering with the ball in a warm up possession game with my U12's when I felt a sharp smack in my right calf. I thought I had been hit with a rock, until it all started tightening up. I have not been able to walk on it since and will be seeing a doctor tomorrow. Can anyone offer any insight into exactly what has happened to me? Will it heal itself with rest or does it require surgery? Anything you can offer would be helpful. Thanks.
Who would like to make the first smart ass comment? Ya know, had Jeff Agoos been playing with 12 year olds, I think he still would have suffered(faked) that injury because he wouldn't be able to keep up.
Was this a pulled muscle? A cramp? A torn tendon? I don't have enough information. Whatever it was, rest, ice, compression, elevation are in order.
CoachBarry, I think you'll get alot more responses from the regular posters in the Player section. Start a thread there.
sounds like a cramp to me. Eat more bananas, stretch it out....eat some salty foods and drink LOTS of water. I used to get them all the time, but now I dont drink anything but water, milk, and orange juice(bout 10-20 glasses of water a day). The pain and stiffness will go away in a few days if it is a cramp...if the pain continues, u may want to see a doctor
I did something similiar to Agoos. I was playing with the kids at a youth soccer camp and went down like a shot ... no one even near me. Total pain for about a month and a half. Lots of ice, heat and staying off it helped a bit. Bit I am pretty sure I tore my calf muscle. I can feel the calf muscle jiggle but the other non hurt one is still normal. Kind of freaky really. I had no insurance at the time so there was little I could other than the above.
Thanks I went to the doctor on Tuesday who diagnosed me with a right gastroc (inside half of the calf muscle) strain. I am hobbling around a bit still but making great progress in the first couple of days. Treatment includes 2 days of RICE, a week to 10 days of Naproxen 500mg 2X/day, and optional physical therapy. My men's indoor league season begins in less than 2 weeks, so I opted for the physical therapy 2-3 X per week. I don't know if I will be ready for the first game, but, like Taylor Twellman, I'll just call it day to day and see how I feel that day. Thanks to everyone for your kinds words, helpful advice, and even the smart a$$ remarks.
