Today's DMN reports that 2nd round draft pick tore is ACL while training with the US men's U-23 team in Portugal on Sunday. Just 2 days after the MLS draft. What a huge disapointmen. I was hoping to see this kid play since he grew up in my town.

Well - at least the Burn didn't draft him after he tore his ACL.

Too bad though. Even though I doubt he would have seen much playing time anyway - best case he is a 5th forward.

Well, I am disappointed as well. He has good size and might be a good target man up front, which we don't really have right now. The aritcle did say he might be back in 6 months, so he may get a run out at the end of the season.

Of all the Burn draft picks he most needs training camp. Nice potential, but this is horrible timing for him. Hopefully he keeps his mind clear and his eyes open and learns as much as he can from film and the sidelines. Devestating blow, my heart goes out to the kid.

for his sake it is good he is P-40. At least he will be protected and have a chance to rehab.

Do you think this will give Taranchilla(sp) a chance to make the roster then as a 5th forward or something like that? Based on the draft I thought Thompson would be the rookie bench player for that spot, but now who gets it?

Sucks that Thompson tore his ACL. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

This is really too bad. I think, with the accurate crosses coming from ROB and Chivas, a big target forward really had a good chance to contribute. This is also one of the reasons I think Cerritos will have a good year. He is not tall, but he is good in the air.

As for not wishing an ACL injury on my worst enemy? Well, ex girlfriends, everyone on the Chicago Fire....

Damn, what bad luck. At least he turned pro and was P40 this year, he probably would have been a longshot to be drafted had he stayed another year. At least he can live at home, have surgery and rehab. He's in pretty good shape also, I can recommend some excellent doctors since I've had both ACLs reconstructed. I'm sure he's determined, and can make it past this. Mathis has overcome two also, and Wolff is in the process of overcoming his second one also.

This injury has become so common nowadays that it's about time for some orthopedic doctor or physical therapist to come up with a preventive work out program.

I read an interview with the Galaxy's strength and conditioning coach and it seems as if they've done just that.

There are many useful strength and stretching exercises that athletes typically perform only as part of a rehabilitation program following injury/surgery. But the Galaxy have their players perform these same exercises as part of their everyday training.

After instituting this training program, the Galaxy found their players succombing to less injuries during the course of the season. And as a side benefit, the rehabilitation exercises helped their athletes' strength and endurance resulting in better game performance.

So if he wasn't P-40 he could have been cut?

I am sure if he was not roster protected he would be like Gbandi was last year. A full roster player.
If the Burn had felt highly enough to keep him anyway he would not have been cut. But if he was not a first or second rounder he likely would have been.

All of which is hypothetical, he is P-40 and is protected.

Basically, if the Burn didn't like the progress he was making next season(which is when he'll be likely to see some time), they could theoretically waive him. Since he's P40 though I'm not sure they can do that.....I could be wrong though.

you can waive a P-40. But why would you want to, being roster protected.

unless you need space on the Dev roster

Does anyone know when the league usually announces the changes in player status?
Does EJ and DJ continue to be P-40's?
    Behncke DEV?
Vaca I have to believe is going to be a SI, he has been a regular starter for 2 years now.

Vaca could become an full international? Is that the rule, that if he starts regularly, he doet remain a junior international? That would suck if he did.

Jeffries told me at he end of last year that there was a chance all of that could happen including Vaca being "graduated" to SI. Based on playing time and salary. See Andy Williams...

When MLS signed the new batch of P-40's they announced the "graduating" P-40's.

Countess, EJ, and Stone all stay P-40.
    Vaca Stays Jr Int.
Behncke has graduated off the Dev Roster and will have to make the team outright.

All of which has been avaliable for some time at

    Two and 2

Project 40 is a four year program but only the first two are guaranteed, the second two years are at the option of the team/league.

Any more news on the injury?

    Just how bad is it?

I'm guessing it's not Josh Wolff/Chris Gbandi bad, but I've read 4 months in some places and 6 months in others.

Not that there's any reason to push the guy to get back earlier, I'm just curious.
