Shuvy can you put Japan NT somewhere in the title just in case, as to create no illusions for trolls of who's team this thread is about :) (then delete this post)

Re: The Olympic Football 2008 [R]

As mentioned earlier, as fun as it is watching Sorimachi Japan, they are certainly unpredictable. Couple that with a lack of information at this level, bookmakers naturally have a fair spread on their stakes. Only a couple of weeks to go now, out of curiosity, I've looked up a few.

For outright winner of the Olympics (in other words who will most likely win the tournament), the most optimistic vs least optimistic were: (with decimal multipliers, and = sign for nations with equal odds to Japan)
    Code:
    [B][I]Bet365 William Hill[/I][/B]
    --------------------------------------------------------
    Argentina	2.87 Argentina	2.62
    Brazil 3.40 Brazil 3.40
    Italy 8.00 Italy 8.50
    Holland 9.00 Holland 10.00
    Cameroon	15.00 Ivory Coast	19.00
    Ivory Coast	19.00 Cameroon	21.00
    Nigeria 21.00 Nigeria 23.00
    =Serbia 26.00 Serbia 26.00
    =[B]Japan* 26.00[/B] U S A 34.00
    Belgium 29.00 South Korea 34.00
    South Korea	41.00 Belgium 41.00
    USA 41.00 China 51.00
    Australia	41.00 Australia	67.00
    China 67.00 [B]Japan* 81.00[/B]
    Honduras	101.00 Honduras	151.00
New Zealand	201.00 New Zealand	301.00

Further, William Hill had South Korea as "Korea DPR" on the list, so maybe they're clueless on what's been going on.

    Others were somewhere in between:
    Code:
    [B][I]Ladbrokes Skybet[/I][/B]
    --------------------------------------------------------
    Argentina	1.75 Argentina	2.75
    Brazil 2.00 Brazil 3.50
    Holland 8.00 Italy 8.00
    Italy 8.00 Netherlands	9.00
Ivory Coast	16.00 Ivory Coast	15.00
    Nigeria 16.00 Nigeria 15.00
    Serbia 20.00 Cameroon	21.00
    Cameroon	25.00 Serbia 21.00
    China 33.00 =[B]Japan* 34.00[/B]
    South Korea	33.00 =Belgium	34.00
    USA 33.00 =USA 34.00
    =Belgium	40.00 =China 34.00
    =[B]Japan* 40.00[/B] Australia	41.00
    Australia	50.00 South Korea	41.00
    Honduras	125.00 Honduras	67.00
New Zealand	150.00 New Zealand	101.00
So they seem to agree that Argentina and Brazil are the most likely, Honduras and New Zealand least likely. The others are spread out in between. Those = odds are interesting too, as Skybet sees Japan alongside China, USA and Belgium with same odds, while Bet365 put us alongside Serbia, above those aforementioned. Then there's the William Hill's 81.00 for Japan, far below them. Overall Japan is being seen to be a "midtable bunch", which is probably a safe stance to take for bookies as they're probably clueless, one way or the other.

One off tourny like this drives bookies nuts, but it's an interesting and nice pass time viewing. Whether you're glass half full or empty, I think we can all find something here to get a good laugh :)

Wow, thanks for the odds. Hmm, I swear Japan has more than a 1 in 81 chance of winning if theres only 16 teams..

Toyoda scored two goals in the test match? Before, he seemed to be the "what is he doing in the team?" striker, but now I wonder who will be the starting strikers against USA.

the starting lineup I would like to see is:

    Lee
    Morimoto (or Toyoda?)

    Kagawa
    Honda K
    Kajiyama
    Honda T

    Uchida
    Yasuda (or Nagatomo?)
    Morishige
    Mizumoto

    Nishikawa

Yeah, William Hill's 1 in 81 surprised me too, but I think they tinkered it for business stragey. Bookies do that sometimes, especially for lower demography. Afterall they won't gain anything from being identical to other competitors. If you see 81 odds you are more likely to put money on it than, say, 30. If you put down 1 unit of your money ($1, £1, ¥200 or whatever) it comes back to you 80 times more. For all practical purposes, they could've given it 1000 multiplier. Sure they'll get into trouble if Japan really does win the Olympics, but given how unlikely that is, you could give it any odds to draw more customers.

Hmm I'm tempted to put the smallest amount I can on Japan now at William Hill. But wait, I won't because it's just too unlikely :D It'll be funny in a couple of months time Japan turns out to be the winner, I'll probably be crying for not putting down a lot of money ;) If I put down ¥10,000... ¥800,000 OMG  I think their business strategy is working on me.

    It's a tough group.
Holland will play with almost their best squad.

Nigeria is one of the favoruites. Top African teams are always good in youth competitions. Remember who won the gold medal in 1996 and 2000.

USA is underrated. In the U-20 WC in 2007, they outplayed Brazil.

    from what i read...
i dont think any channel is showing the soccer games but all of the japanese channels are showing other sports like gymnastics and table tennis, etc.
i know one site was showing the womens soccer game or the highlights of it but if i remember correctly non of the channels including NHK are showing the soccer games.

No I'm not sure but this article from au.fourfourtwo.com suggests it is. I had a look and apparently it's Cameroon v Italy or something on that day.

I'm disappointed at the racist comments against Lee by Japanese users. :(
I thought Japanese people got over racism (especially against Koreans and Chinese) after the fall of Imperial Japan. But racism in Japan still exists...?

    PS: Good luck U-23 Japan!
