    Shatamura would be a better player if he wasn't playing for Celtic

    A wee question to satisfy my linguistic curiosity:

    Does anyone know the respective foreign language abilities (or not) of Japan's overseas contingent ? Or even the Koreans for that matter ?

    It's well documented that Japan's Major League baseball stars are hopeless at learning English - Nomo being the classic example - but are the footy stars any better?

    Nakata H is supposed to be fluent in Italian, isn't he ? I heard a brief interview with him on Match of the Day in which he stumbled monosyllabically in English - I was led to believe his English was pretty good.

    Hidetoshi is fluent in Italian, his english is good, not fantastic but good. Shinji Ono is fluent in Dutch, Inamoto struggles a bit with english, Don't know if Takahara speaks fluent in german. Thats all i know about

    I am glad how Nakamura is warmly accepted by many Celtic fans. I think Celtic Park has one of the best atmoshere in the world. Celtic has many attacking talents, so I am sure they will win Scottish League this season, and expect good performance in Europe next season. I especially like Maloney!

    I read Nakata's pronunciation of Italian is better than Totti! Though I don't know it is true :eek:.

    the SPL may not be a top league but it certainly does no harm to a players progress. Petrov has been with Celtic since he's 19 and he is now captain of Bulgaria, captained them at Euro 2004. Larsson spent 7 seasons at Celtic and got better every year for Sweden. No player moves to Celtic and harms his international career, if they're playing regularly they only get better.

    Strachan is one of the best coaches in the world for improving players. He made a £26m profit from selling his own buys in his 5 years at Coventry:

    Huckerby: £1m -> £5m
    Evtushok: £800k -> £800k
    Haworth: £500k -> £600k
    Soltvedt: £500k -> £300k
    Lightbourne: £500k -> £450k
    Johansen: Free -> Free
    Nilsson: £200k -> Free
    Boateng: £250k -> £4.5m
    Moldovan: £3.25m -> £4m
    Clement: £625k -> 775k
    Wallemme: £700k -> £500k
    Jarni: £2.6m -> £3.35m
    Brightwell: Free -> Free
    Hall: £300k -> Free
    Aloisi: £650k -> £1.5m
    Hadji: £4m -> £4.5m
    Keane: £6m -> £13m
    Bellamy: £6m -> £6.5m
    Hartson: £4m -> £6.5m
    ------
    Total: £25.875m -> £52.275
    Profit (in just 5 years): £26.4m

    To be fair to Nakata, he handled his press conference on signing for Bolton in English and came across as really rather thoughtful, in what one would imagine was potentially a pretty darn stressful situation.

    Those MOTD interviews are a little bit weird, too, if you don't know how to play that game. The format of them is basically just for the interviewer to make a statement (i.e. not ask a question) and then expect the player / coach / whoever just to roll with it, e.g. "A good win for Bolton today, Hide." Doesn't give much to go on, does it - especially if you're a bit unconfident of your language skills, never mind getting to grips with a new culture.

    Gamba 2005, how do you get your information about Inamoto?

    Nomo was hopeless to reporters in English, he's much better than he led on to be. He hates the press so he feigned it.......robert Whiting talks about it in the Meaning of Ichiro.

    Another thing about Nakata is that he has a bit of an "attitude", and often gives monosyllabic answers to reporters when he gets the sense that they are asking stupid questions. I have seen him do this in Japanese too.

    Reporter: Well, your team won the match today, and you scored the winning goal!

    Nakata "I did?"

    Reporter: "Uhhh, yes, you did. It was a great goal too. What did you think when you scored it?

    Nakata: "Go00000oall"

    etc.

    Were the questions thoughtful and insightful? If so, then maybe it had something to do with his English. If they were the usual dumb questions, I think maybe he was just playing his usual game of "snub the reporter".

    No, he's answering the questions as they should be answered.

    If the reporter wants answers with insight, he should ask open-ended questions that can't be answered in one or two words.

    I remember learning that back in the day ... high school journalism class, if memory serves.

    Here's a compilation of Nakamura's first 3 months at Celtic:

    I didn't make it, just found it on a Celtic forum. Its more to do with his overall play than his goals and assists. He sets up a load of goals though, most of which aren't in this comp.

    One thing I am not content with him is his (lacking) scoring ability, though he is not a striker.
    Anyway I think he even deserve starter in Japan NT.

    Thank you. Very nice clip.
    Though I personally want Nakamura become more aggressive and score goals, he seems to collaborate very well with other Celtic players.

    hopefully it'll make him even better! not sure exactly where keane's going to play but certainly no threat to nakamura's place in the team, he's been possibly our most important player this season.

    certainly when he doesn't play we're nowhere near as good. even though he seems to play within himself at times, he's just such a good player who never misplaces a pass. I love watching him.

    If the best midfield is going to be played then Keane, Petrov and Nakamura will all be involved. Its between Lennon and McGeady for the drop. It'll probably be McGeady dropped in the short term and Lennon in the long term unless Strachan plays 3 at the back or 1 up front.
