Japan to host World Club Champs---ESPN Soccernet May 8, 2004: Japan will host a revamped World Club Championship in 2005, FIFA President Sepp Blatter announced on Saturday. He said the tournament would feature the top teams from each continental body to determine the number one club side in the world. Japan has traditionally hosted the Toyota Cup, an annual clash between the champions of Europe and South America for the unofficial title of best club in the world. 'You have to include the rest of the world to make it a true world championship,' Blatter told delegates and guests at the Asian Football Confederation's annual Congress on Saturday. 'How can Europe versus South America be known as a world club championship?'
It would be great if we could keep the discussion on this thread related to news about the tournament. All the top European sides are refusing to take part.. Yet another one of that ************ Blatters idea's. European clubs already have a heavy schedule. Blatter's just jealous UEFA are the biggest footballing board. All FIFA give us is the World Cup and thats it. And now he wants to create the world club championships which is absolute rubbish, because we already have the UEFA Champions League.
Which of course does the rest of the world no good. If the tourney was kept to 6 teams (one team from each region), and the European and South American teams were limited to two games, which is one whole game more than now, I don't see the huge objection. If it is, scrap the UEFA Super Cup, or let the CL runner-up play it.
Im just saying the European sides are refusing to join.. In my opinion its a waste of time..we have the UEFA Champions League enough said.
Gee....thanks for sharing. Read the two threads I linked. Every bloody angle on the controversy surrounding the tournament has been covered on there. If you have anything to add that hasn't been said before you're more than welcome to post it here. Until then I will kindly ask you to shut your mug...
