It's a boring Friday so here we go, straight from FIFA: http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/01/95/44/57//regulationsfu17wcuae2013_ee.pdf

The 16 teams that qualify from the group stage will contest the round of 16
    as follows:
    2A v. 2C = Winner 1
    1D v. 3rd from B, E or F = Winner 2
    1B v. 3rd from A, C or D = Winner 3
    1F v. 2E = Winner 4
    1E v. 2D = Winner 5
    1C v. 3rd from A, B or F = Winner 6
    2B v. 2F = Winner 7
    1A v. 3rd from C, D or E = Winner 8

    2.
The following table indicates the pairings in the round of 16, depending
upon which third-placed teams qualify from the group stage.
    [... useless example cut]

on the left are the possible 4 teams qualified. On the right, which team does the 1st get. Japan is Group D (1D).
Croatia is already eliminated so I took out all the combinations with "C". Russia and Iran\Austria\Canada are the only in doubt so I also took out the combinations where A,B or F were eliminated.

    Combin.: 1A 1B 1C 1D

    A B D F 3D 3A 3B 3F
    A B E F 3E 3A 3B 3F

it's indeed Japan - Sweden for sure then.

    should be a good challenge.

They can defend really well. Any set piece they get will be a big opportunity to score on Japan. Looking forward to it, but expect Japan to win it

The bracket is a mess anyway. With this 3rd place thing it's all crazy.
Why does Uzbekistan who got 2nd, play against another 2nd ?
Why does Nigeria - as first - instead play against the 2nd of group E? Mexico (2nd) also plays Italy (2nd) while Tunisia (2nd) the first of group E. Wtf?
I can't understand what the criterion is. I mean, yes, you have to do that to have a 16-teams bracket, but maybe it made more sense to let more team qualify then just like a world cup... ?

Draw a triange, put 2 letters on each side, mix it with random algebraic equations and take the last letter of the result. You have your opponent.

Yes it's messy they should have just added more groups and that would be it.

Also Japan has a really nice chance here to reach semi finals. Than probably Nigerian stampede/tornado... will hit

The other option being Uruguay which are a good team.

    Well we ll see

yeah but apart from the mess, I mean, it's really unfair that some teams can play against a 3rd and some against a 2nd... of course in reality the gap between those teams probably isn't that huge, but a group like Japan's for example, which ended with 9 - 6 - 3 points, hints that the gap between 2nd and 3rd is there.
And Argentina (assuming they win) as first will play Tunisia while Brazil could play Russia (or 3rd of group E)... meh. Let's go to the final.

Life is unfair my friend, you know it. it's probably the best they could come up with considering they're giving a chance to some of the best 3rd.

That said it's going to be tough against Sweden because those boys are TALL.

Well better solution for the 3rd placed team would imo be that the 4 best winners of the groups would get them. That way at least it would make sense

Iran pulled off a narrow win which was enough to qualify. Well, Nigeria awaits them... 3 AFC teams out of 4 advancing anyway =) (not counting hosts UAE). All African teams advanced, too.

I bet for 2 african teams in semifinals.
And Japan will face at least 2 african teams too.
But, what "type" of football the most interesting teams played in the group stage?
I meant: Japan U17 has his tiki taka style.
What about Uzbekistan, Uruguay, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Brazil?

They are becoming better match by match but they were atrocious against NZ, and the GK had to save a penalty.
Their striker Alberto Cerri is yet to score a goal...

But Cerri is very strong physically, and the left back, Federico Di Marco is really impressive.

Well if they will go past Mexico they are good enough if then they manage to get past Brazil/Russia they are title contenders.

Will have to give it all from the bat

    LOl. You're right Blue-San.
They were talking like Italy can be an opponent of Japan so soon... They need to beat the undefeatable ones (Brazil) and then beat the other undefeatable ones (Japan) to be title contenders :p

It'll be interesting to see the starting line-up tomorow. One thing for sure will be that these guys won't stop running, Tunisia were cramping up so early after being made to chase all night.

What are your opinions on No.17 Uryu, who scored that beauty against Russia, and No.10 Mizutani?

Not the best, not the worst players in the team. They all do the same things apart from a few of them (Sugimoto, Sugimori) so an individual evaluation is hard to make.

How good are these two players then? Is it true that several players were playing out of position?
