White supremacists and QAnon enthusiasts are obsessed with the Byzantine Empire. https://www.yahoo.com/news/why-white-supremacists-qanon-enthusiasts-222625204.html
I'm wondering how many are suffering from less severe forms of mental illness such as depression and anxiety and similar. There is a lot of the feel-good to those who are suffering with those on that side of the political spectrum, and each failure is sure to make those issues worse.
A couple of weeks ago I came across a podcast that was on Justinian and Theodora and figured I'd give it a listen to maybe learn some thing new about them. The podcast was by some Brits and I gave up about ten minutes in cause I couldn't handle their pronunciation of Byzantine as bison teen.
Normally I don't mind different pronunciation. For example I get a huge kick out of the difference with aluminum but I found their pronunciation of Byzantine to be really jarring.
By-zan-tine. Doing a few Guardian crosswords recently has highlighted how many British words and phrases I've forgotten since leaving the UK in 1995.
I know it's a small difference but hearing it for the first time really had me feeling like a Quimby asking the butler to say "Chowder"
Roma In Greek: beez-a-teen-nosh In Turkish: beez-antz In Scottish English: "too many syllabellalls". So the Americans seem to have it right.
I listen to a lot of British comedians/panel shows, so I'm used to the different pronunciations. I know (knew) enough Spanish that I could get the gist of a conversation. Then I heard a Chilean speaking to a Puerto Rican. That was Spanish on cocaine.
There was a great book that came out in the 60s that went through all the Spanish dialects and the differences between them. I found it in the Barbican library in London. I think it was by Charles Berlitz, the man, not the company. It also went through Spanish customs at the time, which were positively medieval.
I'm pretty sure that, within my lifetime, bullfighting might have been more popular than soccer in Spain and Mexico.
Well, in bullfighting, someone from Mexico might have a chance to win a world championship, if there was a World Championship. In soccer??? Nah!
I don't know, a whole lot of matadors have been relegated to the pits of hell, as bulls sought revenge for their torture.
No doubt, some Spanish accents are hard to follow. And if you throw in all the different regional slang words and phrases it can get extra dicey. But at least when you're reading it you know how things are supposed to sound
I don't believe they ever called themselves that; the point was that they referred to themselves as "Romans" in medieval Greek.
